Diane Whiteside Guest Blogging Today

Guest Blogger for August 16th is Diane Whiteside! Her book "Bond of Darkness" is due for release on October 7th! Diane will be giving away a signed uncorrected ARC of Bond of Darkness at the end of the day on the 16th so don't miss out!
Excerpt from Bond of Darkness:
Texas Ranger Stephanie “Steve” Reynolds is on the hunt for a serial killer who is stalking innocent women in the Lone Star State. The beautiful Ranger comes to suspect the unbelievable – that the killer is a vampire.
Steve knows all about vampiros, since she has a demon lover of her own. For the past several years, Ethan Templeton has been helping her on cases when he wasn’t sharing her bed. But Steve, craving mortal motherhood, refused to get serious about the handsome vampire. Especially after she saw him kill a man she’d just arrested…
Ethan loves Steve, but he thinks nothing can come of their passion. Even if he could convince her to share his immortal life, his vampire patron, Don Rafael Perez, would execute him for transforming her.
But when the killer menaces Steve, Ethan realizes he has no choice except to risk everything. Will Steve agree to join a man she’s called murderer—or will she refuse her one chance at eternal life, lust, and love?
To everyone out there that would like to ask Diance a question please feel free to do so..

What exactly does ARC stand for...if anything?

Diane Whiteside said...

Hi, Marge!

An ARC is an Advanced Readers Copy. Basically, it's a copy of the manuscript that has most but not all of the editing done. So beware of typos! A few changes may show up between this version and what's finally published. But BOND OF DARKNESS has always been a pretty clean manuscript, thank God.

There are stories that one of F. Scott Fitzgerald's great books (maybe THE GREAT GATSBY?) was basically writing while he was correcting the page proofs. That's a really horrifying thought, since it's after the stage when ARCs are printed. His publisher must have been sweating bullets.

Hi Marge,
ARC stands for Advanced Readers Copy which is usually uncorrected. You get all the little mess ups which make the book more unique.

Thanks, pamk!

I'll be very, very happy, too, to see all three volumes of the trilogy stand side-by-side on bookstore shelves. :-)

A few words about BOND OF DARKNESS...

It's the third volume of my Texas vampire trilogy, following BOND OF BLOOD and BOND OF FIRE. It can be read on its own, though.

Ruby - I was chatting with a friend about our favorite vampire series and we started talking about where we'd like to see one set. Texas came up right away and it was like a fist grabbed my heart. I could just see those alpha males, deadly as anything, sauntering into a saloon... I knew I had to write the series!

But I wanted to make my vampires as factual as possible, as if you could find them out there if you just turned your head fast enough at the right moment. So I've cross-checked them with scientists, policement, and historians.

BOND OF DARKNESS is the trilogy's climax. It's a modern-day thriller, where forensic scientists are stumped and police procedures are followed. :-)

With an HEA, of course.

Hi Diane,
Since this is the climax of the series do you have another book/series started or have you thought about one?
Also, Why Texas? Do you think vampires and weres have a better chance there because of the vast emptiness of the land and the ability to be able to hide themselves easier?

Hi, terra57 and Diane!!!!
I've just heard about this Texas Vampires’ Trilogy and got curious about it... I'm definately adding the first to my wishlist :)

I'd like to ask Diane, something that if I could I would ask to every author I'd meet... "Did you know how this triology would end when you began writing it?"

Best Wishes,
Sara (YellowBow@Bookcrossing)

Hi Diane, the first two books in the series are fabulous, and I can't wait to read this one.

Terra - BOND OF DARKNESS is the climax of the trilogy and the foundation of a series, which I pray my publisher will pick up. In other words, ain't no hetero couple gets an HEA in Texas until Steve and Ethan do. (Anybody who's read the 1st 2 books, like Cathy, understands why!) So there are lots and lots of other stories in this universe, which I'd love to tell.

Texas is fabulous for setting vampires in. Uber-masculine guys, protecting the ordinary people, falling in love with women they can't have. It's all very, very western, actually.

But Texas is also brutally hard for vampires to live in - because there just aren't many prey! They can't stroll down to the nearest backalley and grab a handy murderer to drain. Not when there was only 2 people per square mile for much of its history - and that's counting every man, woman and child of every race and creed.

My Texas vampires are truly rural vampires. When I realized that, I started rethinking all the rules. :-)

Hi, Azulcerulio! Yes, I knew how this trilogy would end when I started it. (At least the big confrontation which provides the HEA for my external conflict.) But I always know "the shape of forever" for my hero/heroine before I'm willing to take on a project.

I'm one of those authors for whom The Big Sucky Middle is the huge problem. I usually have very little idea of what kind of mountain my characters will have to climb before they can reach that big climax. It can be a real pain.

Hullo, Cathy! Glad you like BOND OF BLOOD and BOND OF FIRE - and I hope you'll love BOND OF DARKNESS. I think you'll find some surprises in it. I know I did.

Hi Diane,
I can see your point now. It never struck me as to hard it would be without prey around every corner and also the fact that the sunlight would put a damper on a normal vampire. The heat would be great for them since they are always so cold anyhow.
Wow I think I need to take the blinders off and look at all the possibilities that can present themselves with such hard rules.

wow i just picked up the first one in thsi series. Looks like I need to rearrange my tbr shelf. This one sounds great

Ohh this one is going to the top of my list to get. I like the cover.

I enjoy reading vampire books

Thank you, blackrose37! Sharing my stories with people is pure joy.

terra57 - I love the challenge of thinking out of the box. Breaking the rules is one of the things which makes writing paranormal romances interesting.

And you just keep thinking like that, pamk? Hugs! I've got a lot more stories to fill up your bookshelves with. LOL
