Elizabeth Hoyt Guest Blogs & Book Giveaway

Elizabeth Hoyt Meditates on the Second Book in a Series

So the other night I sat down and looked at one of my to-be-read piles and picked out Christina Dodd’s SCENT OF DARKNESS. This is the first book in her paranormal Darkness Chosen series…and over a year old. This despite the fact that Dodd is an auto read for me. Sigh. Yes, I’m waaaay behind in my tbr pile. But as I’d figured SCENT OF DARKNESS was a wonderful read and the next morning I skipped off to my local book store to find the second book in the series, TOUCH OF DARKNESS.

They were out.

No problem, I thought, I’ll try the big box book store in town.

Also out.

Okaaaay. How about the other big box book store?

Out.

By this time I was getting slightly obsessive. When my critique partner and I made a road trip up to Chicago, we stopped to do some drive-by signings (run in, sign our books, run out again.) I knew I was in trouble when I automatically started looking in the D’s (for Dodd) instead of the H’s (for Hoyt) at each store. Four more stores didn’t have the book. At this point I was beginning to think I’d hallucinated the title. Every store had a whole shelf of Dodd’s back list, including the three other books in the Darkness Chosen series. I began compulsively looking at the front of her paranormal books, each of which listed TOUCH OF DARKNESS as the second book in the series.

Fortunately for my sanity (and that of my critique partner) the fifth store had TOUCH OF DARKNESS. I did a found-the-book victory dance that would’ve seriously embarrassed my teenagers had they been there and ran to the front to buy the book, feeling like I was clutching pure gold.

Which brings me to my own series. You see my current release, TO TASTE TEMPTATION is the first book in a four-book series, The Legend of the Four Soldiers. It occurred to me, somewhere in the midst of frantically trying to find Dodd’s second book, that if my readers are anywhere near as obsessed by my books as I was by Dodd’s series, I’ll be a very happy camper indeed.

Here’s one of the blurbs on Amazon.com for TO TASTE TEMPTATION:

The ton loves nothing more than a good scandal, and they're giddy with the appearance of wealthy Samuel Hartley. Not only is he self-made, American, and in the habit of wearing moccasins, but he is also notorious for fleeing a battle in which several English gentlemen lost their lives. What the ton doesn't know, though, is that Samuel is in London because of this massacre. He believes his regiment was given up to the enemy and won't rest until he finds the traitor.

Lady Emeline Gordon is captivated with Samuel. Not only does he defy convention with his unusual dress, his sensual smile, and his forthright manner, but he survived the battle that killed her beloved brother. Samuel suspects that the person responsible for her brother's death is Jasper Renshaw, Viscount Vale, a family friend since childhood--and Emeline's fiance. Despite Emeline's belief in Vale's innocence and her refusal to break off her betrothal, she and Samuel begin a passionate affair. But can their relationship survive the fallout from Samuel's investigation?

Notice how the blurb sneaks in mention of some guy named Vale? Yeah, he’s the hero of the second book in the series, TO SEDUCE A SINNER. Fortunately, I’ve already received reader mail about Vale (some of it on the first day the book was out!) so I think he’ll probably do all right in his own book when it comes out this November.

So tell me what series you’re following…and what book you’d go to eight different book stores to look for! I’ll pick one person from the comments column to win an autographed copy of THE RAVEN PRINCE.

Cheers!
Elizabeth Hoyt

Well, it'd probably really, really corny for me to choose "Elizabeth Hoyt," wouldn't it? So, I'll give you my runner up:

Laura Kinsale

She hasn't had a new release in ages...don't know if she ever will. But if she did, I would be running to the bookstore. And that says something, because I live in the middle of nowhere! My bookstore trip would take about an hour one way.

C.L. Wilson, Author of Lord of the Fading Lands, etc.

Not that I'm afraid I won't find her stories of the Tairen in any bookstore I might enter, but I'd be obsessive enough to go looking for hers if I had to.

And I'm pleased to say that TO TASTE TEMPTATION is next on my TBR pile. I loved THE LEOPARD PRICE, so I'm sure I'm in for a treat.

I meant THE LEOPARD PRINCE! Dang, I need a cup of coffee!

I had a similar search a while back when I was searching for AA author Kimberly Kaye Taylor. I went from store to store looking. Even planning stops on my way from home(MS) to Florida at various bookstores. I had to finally concede defeat and ordered the book online.

I have added The legend of the four soldiers to my to be read pile. Thanks for all your great stories!!!

Ummm...yea, I'm sort of a series-or is that serial-Addict, so if a writer can entice me with an interesting blurb or excellent excerpt I'm pretty much hooked for the whole series. I love watching characters evolve from book to book, so if the writing keeps me hooked I'm there for it all! Good news for you writers I'm sure LOL

Easy! Sherrilyn Kenyon's dark-hunters, bad series or her as Kinley MacGregor.

If her latest book is not there, oh there'd be seriously trouble.

Jennifer Ashley, Joy Nash and Robin Popp's Immortal books. Those are awesome!

Good morning, all! (Although it's perilously close to afternoon where I am.)

I'd run to the bookstore for Laura Kinsale, too, kris eton! And it's sweet of you to say you'd do it for my books, too! ;-)

I keep thinking that I need to try CL Wilson, emilybryan.

Isn't it nice that if all else fails, we can always go online for those important books, s?

I'm envious of your Eloisa James and Victoria Alexander series that you're following, peggy! I can't read historicals when I'm writing them and my historical tbr pile is toppling over!

I'm also following JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood, Phoebe. Isn't it wonderful?

Good to know that you're a series addict, Stephanie!

And I need to try some of the series you've mentioned, Susan B.

And I haven't tried the Immortals series, either, raonaid. Oh, dear, so many books, so little time! ;-)

I'll pop in later again today!

Hi Elizabeth!

I'll say you & J.R. Ward. To Taste Temptation, your new book (#1 in a series) is en route via amazon :-)

I was so happy to see this & future books on the horizon after so enjoying your delicious Princes trilogy. My book buying $ are limited, but your books are worth every penny, and THEN some!

I hadn't read much historical romance until a friend recommended #1 The Raven Prince. It was simply outstanding, so well written and *sexy*! I ran right out for #2 The Leopard Prince, and #3 The Serpent Prince. Gems, each one ... all 3 will definitely be on my Top Ten Reads of 2008.

Thanks for visiting with us today, and thanks, Terry, for the chance to visit with a favorite author :-)

Well, I have a huge collection of culinary mysteries and right now I'm trying to find "The Carrot Cake Murder" by Joanne Fluke to complete her series. There are at least a dozen copies of the book in my library's system, and they're all checked out too!

Afternoon All,
Thanks Elizabeth for taking time out of you busy schedule to come and chat with us. Sorry I didn't get around sooner but have had family here from Florida for the day visiting so been busy too.

Hmm.....I think there are just too many good series out there to pick just one. The funny part is I usually start in the middle of a series then work my way back then forward. I never do anything the right way just cause I like to be different.

Hope you all have a great day. I have to go back to the family.
huggs,
Terra

The main one I'm obesessed with is Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series. I also love Colleen Gleason's Gardella Chronicles and Christine Feehan's Dark Series.

Christin Feehan is the author I follow around. I have all her books and I follow all of her series, so as soon as a book comes out by her I have to go get it.

I remember when I first read Elizabeth Holt's THE RAVEN PRINCE and I automatically knew I found a wonderful writer that I'm so going to look forward to reading and I loved the first trilogy!! (So I have RAVEN PRINCE for the contest, so don't add me in for that). I do have this new series, the first two books that are out, on my wishlist. I'm so hoping to get soon. I'm very excited about them. A thrill you are visiting here today Victoria!

I smile, I too need to get Christina Dodd's second book in the series. I know the feeling from yours when wanting to read it NOW, LOL. Besides heres, I love to follow:

Kathryn Smith-Brotherhood Of Blood Series (historical vampire romance)

Jeaniene Frost-Night Huntress (Vampire Romance)

Jillian Hunter-Bocastle Family series (historical romance)

Jeri Ready-Smith-Aspect Of Crow (Paranormal Fantasy Romance)

Kind of put one series of a few genres. I follow so many, many that listed here too like Ward, Feehan, Kenyon, Eloisa James, Cynthia Eden and so many more. Its a addiction! I love it, LOL

Actually, I just got To Taste Temptation in the mail yesterday! I plan to start it as soon as I finish Secrets of Surrender by Madeline Hunter. I know that I will love this first book in your new series, so I will definitely continue with the remaining books!

I am not following any particular series right now. I just finished TRY by Lily Burana and am going to start on Celeste Bradley's trilogy about the Dukes. I am a huge Nora Roberts, Lisa Jackson and Karen Robards fan, I am always looking for their books. I only buy hardcovers and a lot of book stores don't carry too many of their work in hardcovers. So I would track them down to different stores if I had to!

I do have a few of your books that are on my TBR pile. Keep up the great work!!

Actually, I'm following the books you posted today. Jennifer St. Giles, the Shadowmen series and hav them all and will make sure I get the next one Kiss of Darkness. :)

Hmmmm, I guess I would go in search of one of The Bastion Club series. JK Rowlings ahs another one coming out set in the Harry Potter world. I would be in trouble from all member of my family if I didn't track that book down. Louise Allen has a great series going too.

You know, I could just keep listing books all day long. LOL It is a good thing that a have a couple of bookstores real close and they are usually well stocked so I haven't had trouble getting the book I wanted when I wanted it. Except there was this one time that I traveled to California and I emailed a bookstore in the area I was going to make sure they would have a copy of the book I wanted since the author of it was going to be there two days before me signing books. They were kind enough to send me a map to the store and save me a copy. LOL

In its earlier days, I would've hunted down bookstores to find the new Dark Hunter release by Sherrilyn Kenyon, but I'm not as fond of the series as I was then.

Now? It would be The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. I am hopelessly in love with the series, with Harry (Dresden, the main character), with Jim's writing.

I'm also pretty into Lori Foster's UFC-ish series and The Ivy League by Diana Peterfreund.

Elizabeth has asked me to post this as google is being difficult to her.

Thank you, everyone, for the great discussion! And a special shout out to Ladiibbug--I know everyone's spending money is precious these days, so I appreciate it when you consider my books to be a worthwhile use
of your money! ;-) Oh, and I love Jim Butcher's DRESDEN FILES, too,
Christina.

Christina is the winner of my book. Please email terraontop57 at yahoo dot com with your snail mail addy and she will forward it.
