Honk If You Love Nerds! by Vicki Lewis Thompson

Thanks for letting me hang out with the Yankee Romance crew today!

As some of you may know, I love nerds. I wrote a whole series of books with nerd heroes, and then, even when I branched out into paranormal comedy, I still wrote about nerds. The hero of my latest book, WILD & HEXY, is most definitely a nerd.

But let me make this clear. I love nerds with nice pecs. My nerds may wear glasses, but they’re more Clark Kent than Napoleon Dynamite. They’re nerds not because they look dopey and act goofy, but because they have superior brain power and know how to use it.

For me, nerdiness is more a state of mind than a physical description. It means they can focus on something to the exclusion of all else. They enjoy studying subjects of interest. They demand excellence from themselves. Take all those characteristics into the bedroom, and what do you have? One hot nerd! Plus, after the fireworks, you can actually have a conversation.

My nerds aren’t smooth operators, but then again, smooth operators don’t appeal to me. Nerds don’t think they’re God’s gift to women. They think women are God’s gift to them, and they’re intensely grateful. How appealing is that?

My nerds have courage. They may not strut around and act as if they’re all that, but when the chips are down, they put everything on the line for those they care about. And they do it without fanfare.

Are you now, or have you ever been in love with a nerd? What was it that attracted you? I'll give away an autographed copy of Wild & Hexy to one lucky winner drawn from all who comment on today's blog post.

Hi Vicki!! I simply loved Over Hexed and cannot wait to read Wild and Hexy! Although admittedly your whole nerd series are favorites of mine.
Have I been in love with a nerd? Yes! In high school. I liked how this one guy wasn't afraid to raise his hand and show off his smarts. And he was so intellegent that he was actually helping teach the math and science teachers things during and between classes. Was it his brain that attracted me? Maybe a little but he just had a wonderful personality and that was what brought him to my attention. Sadly though, my love wasn't returned and he moved out of the US and married last I heard of him.

Good morning Vicki,

You had me with the 1st sentence! I have been waiting for this interview b/c I see your name on the referral lists for good reads. I married a nerd, 19+ years & counting, & even better he was a Boy Scout too. You now always prepared, jack of all trades, if he doesn't know how he WILL figure it out. Everything you say in your article is so true. I keep telling my 21 year old niece to find a nerd they have the ability to concentrate, focus, dedicate themselves to you.

So, I have got to read your books! I am so excited.

Thank you,
Susan B.

Vicki, I love the analogy of your nerds being more Clark Kent than Napoleon Dynamite. If I came across a nerd like that in real life, I think I'd fall in love with him. Nothing sexier than a scholarly man with pecs!

Whoops, I'm trying to get this blogger ID thing figured out, and my last comment came through as coming from my fellow Soapbox Queen, Rhonda Nelson!

Vicki Lewis Thompson said...

Gonna test and see if this posts. Obviously I need a nerd here to help me figure this out, LOL.

All righty! I think we're good to go.

ladyvamp, thanks for the warm fuzzies about my books! But what a sad story about the nerd who got away. I hope another one comes along soon!

Susan B, congrats on almost twenty years of wedded bliss with your nerd. No wonder you're recommending nerds to your niece! And yes, pecs and good biceps, but I don't require washboard abs. (wink)

margay, how nice to see you here!

Okay, my wish list just got longer by a couple of books. I can't help myself when you add paranormal into the mix.

Vicki Lewis Thompson said...

Cool, Daelith! I roped you in!

Hi, Vicki! I read your previous Nerd series (I may be missing one or two). I loved William the Stockbroker!

As far as loving nerds, I haven't come across any in life. But I do so love Henry from Ugly Betty. I wish I could meet someone like that! He's adorable and he's sweet. Who doesn't want to meet a guy like that?

Redz said...

funny you should ask if i was ever in love with a nerd cause I married one! he is the sweetest kindest and most loveable of all the nerds you will ever meet!

i think my SO does qualify as a nerd and i definitely like him. i like that he's got many interests and not all of them are sports! i love that he paints and also sees things (probably he's painter soul) he sees the moon or a beautiful tree, very nice and oooh he knows 100000 poems, that's so very cool!

Hi Vicki, I've loved all your Nerd series, and because I enjoyed them so much I started collecting some of your older works. In fact, I just got a copy of Adam Then and Now yesterday! I've haven't read any of your paranormal books yet, but definitely will some day!

Good Morning Everyone and Hello Vicki! I love the blog article and I do agree that nerds can make life worth living. I find they tend to be more caring, sensitive, funny as well as smart. There is something to be said for the nerd compared to the "In Love With Himself Jock".
My first marriage was to a nerd but he was just not right and we never got along. Sixteen years of marriage and two beautiful daughters have now made us at least civil.
Now my boyfriend I'm living with now, we've been together for thirteen years and though he's not a real nerd he does have some tendicies. He is just so loving though and we get along like we are two parts of a whole so I think he's a keeper.
I have to say I am realing loving what I'm reading from all of you. It shows that we women want more from a man than just good looks. Kudo's to us!
huggs,
Terra

Hi Vicki, I am definitely adding this to my to be read pile. No, I haven't been in love with a nerd but I can see the attraction because I like a guy who is smart along with being sweet and kind.

Hi Vicki! I'm definitely into geeky love. I fell in love with the copier repairman (who later turned into one of his company's star computer technicians)over 16 years ago. He still loves me and I still love him. A geek match made in heaven!

Hi Vicki! I wanted to say that I love your Nerd series, and I've got all the books in my personal collection, except for Nerds Like It Hot. (but I'll get it!!)

I haven't read Over Hexed yet, but I did read Wild & Hexy and it was a blast! Thanks for writing great stories. They are a pleasure to read and I like smiling all the time because of what the characters do and say.

Thanks also for blogging for us today. I loved your entry. :)
And yes, I have met a hot nerd, but I was second in line...

cheers!

Vicki Lewis Thompson said...

christina, I loved William the stockbroker, too! Too bad a delicious nerd hasn't shown up in your life yet, but he could be right around the corner.

redz, I'm glad you found your special nerd!

Ooo, katayoun, an artist nerd sounds wonderful!

aramena, thank you! Adam Then and Now is one of my favorites in the Superromance line. I'm glad you could find it!

Hi, Terra57! Thanks for making my blog look so gorgeous. When I last saw it, it was one boring color.

I agree that the comments today are terrific, and no, we don't always focus on looks. Congrats on finding yourself a keeper!

tiffany, thanks for adding me to your TBR pile. That's very cool.

janel, that's a cute meet if I ever heard one! I have to say, in my line of work, someone who understands technology is a true hero, LOL.

lemonitsa, you couldn't have said anything nicer to me. My goal is to make people smile, so I'm thrilled to know I'm achieving it. Aw, I'm sorry you missed out on that nerd. But someone else will show up. I just know it.

The Tour Manager -- who only lost out on being our high school class' biggest geek because the kid who won put tape on his watch so it wouldn't get scratched when he was shoved into a locker for being a geek -- and I were watching Criminal Minds one night and I turned to him and said, "You know, smart people are really sexy."

His reply? "I'd be really screwed if you didn't think so."

Ruby (Mouth) said...

I ave read both these books and I have to say...they really rock!! Vicki, you are an awesome writer. I did not marry a nerd, but have been in love with one long ago. He went his way when I was not smart enough and in a way, I think I'm glad. :))

Wendy said...

Hi, Vicki!

Go nerds! I want to read your Nerds book, they sound awesome. :)

Wendy said...

When I was in high school, I was friends with a lot of nerds which is why I've always been pro-nerd, lol.

But see, what I like most about them is yeah, they know they're smart but they gloat about it and feel superior to us. At least not all of them.

Vicki Lewis Thompson said...

Susan, that conversation illustrates exactly why I love nerds! Besides being sexily smart, they're also modest and funny.

ruby, thank you! And I have to say, sounds like that nerd wasn't good enough for you.

wendy, I've dated my share of nerds, and you're right -- most of them are quietly confident about their brain power. Go nerds! I hope you enjoy the books.

If I could find myself a Clark Kent-esque man, that would be wonderful! I'll even take Tom Welling who plays Clark Kent, wink, wink :)

tigger9 said...

By your description/definition of a nerd I would have to say yes, that I have really liked a nerd. I don't think that I have ever been in love yet. The guys that I do like are very smart and can focus on just one thing. Wild and Hexy sounds really good.

Just.Me said...

I love nerds that are sexy with brains, like Henry from Ugly Betty. Unfortunately for me, I also loved the bad boy types and that is why I am divorced! Next time it will be a total nerd for me.

Vicki Lewis Thompson said...

yan, that's not a bad thing! Think of all the experiences you can have that way.

sidhevicious, I'd take almost *any* of the men who have played Clark Kent, but I have to admit that Tom Welling did an awesome job. Christopher Reeve will probably always have the top spot in my heart, though.

tigger9, I think it's great that you're holding back on using the L word. It gets tossed around too much, IMO.

just.me, that can be the problem with those bad boys. I've had times when I was attracted to them, too, and it never seems to turn out well. I think they're best as fantasy men in books, LOL.

I'm heading out for dinner, but I'll check back afterward to see if anybody else has popped by to say hello. For those of you who have so far, thanks! It's been great talking to all of you!

I have your Wild and hexy in my to be read list. Since I'm moving I don't really have time to delve into my books.

Have I been in love with a nerd? No.. though sometimes I have considered myself one when I was in high school.

Time to wrap it up for the night, and let me say this has been an outstanding blog day! Thanks again for inviting me to join you. And now it's time to pick a winner!

Here's my method -- I toss an envelope of numbers on the floor and see which one my cat, Eve, decides to play with. Tonight, the number corresponded to . . . Aramena! Congratulations! Just send me your snail mail at vltauthor@aol.com, and I'll send you an autographed copy of WILD & HEXY! Good night, all. It's been wonderful!
