Boo! by Annette Blair

My favorite Halloween decorations are spread by mother earth through New England: red, orange, and yellow leaves floating through the air. Pumpkins and gourds at roadside stands beside haystacks or scarecrows. Chrysanthemums dressed in fall colors. Bittersweet and Chinese Lanterns.

I’m a full time writer now, but for 21 years, I decorated my Prep School office. A favorite decoration was a large pumpkin that could be posed, sat on my desk, his feet hanging off, and every time I returned after a trip up the hall, I found him in a different amusing pose. Once, I found him smoking a cigar. Yes, we were a smoke free school, but we were also a cell-phone free school, which didn’t stop the lockers from ringing as you walked by. Witches were a very large part of my decorating, and sometimes they got posed too, not always in poses that I left as is. Teens can be inventive.

Five years ago, my Halloween tradition changed when I was invited to become Nana to my niece’s children, because her mother, my beloved sister-in-law, had passed. When I held little Travis in my arms minutes after he was born, I fell in deep, deep love. Two years later, little Kelsey entered our lives and hearts, and now my Halloween is for them. I’m picking them up at school at noon today, and taking them to the bank where their mother works for a Halloween Party. Then in the evening, as I’ve done for the last four years, I’m going trick or treating with the family. I couldn’t live without my darlings, and they’ll be so adorable in their costumes. I’ll be dressed as a witch, by the way, which they love.

Obviously I write about witches. In A VEILED DECEPTION, January 2009, New York designer Madeira Cutler comes home to help with her sister Sherry’s wedding but when Sherry is accused of murder, Maddie turns to sleuthing. Home, she has a chance to acquire the haunted Underhill Funeral Chapel Carriage House, once the county morgue, for the vintage dress shop she’s always dreamed of. She also learns that her mother was a witch and that she can read certain vintage clothes for clues to the murder. Psychometry: a gift from her mother. Has she inherited any other witchy gifts?

In my February 2009 book, NEVER BEEN WITCHED, Destiny and Morgan’s amazing story, the last of my Triplet Witch Trilogy, the series comes together with a Samhain Ritual. Destiny has decorated the lighthouse with all of nature’s gifts, and attending the event will be two ghosts and an angel, not to mention each triplet and her hero, with an ending that always makes me cry.

In LACE AND LARCENY, August 2009, 2nd Vintage Magic Mystery, Madeira Cutler, designer sleuth is having the grand opening of Vintage Magic, her Vintage Dress Shop, on Halloween. She’s doing it with a scarecrow competition and a Witch’s Halloween Ball. So we’ll have ghosts and frights, and bumps in the night.

In November 2009, my first supernatural will feature a witch who owns an employment agency: WORKS LIKE MAGIC. From there, she places shape shifters, time travelers, and otherworldly inhabitants of Salem who’ve breached the veil between the planes made thin by human magic. Tentative title: TO LOVE A DRAGON.

We see them here
We see them there
Witches . . .
Witches everywhere

Hear them laugh
See them fly
Hear the whoosh
When Brooms go by

Please tell me how you like to decorate for Halloween or Samhain, how you spend the holiday, and what you like best about the season.

Happy Halloween and Blessed Samhain to all!

Pumpkins. Lots of pumpkins of different sizes. I love the season for the cool weather and the beautiful colors.

At our house we put up pumpkin lights around the front porch, jack-o-lanterns lighting the way up the stairs and from my windows. Sometimes I hang a skeleton or make a dummy out of stuffed clothes. The dummy can be fun too. A few times I've scared friends and family by dressing in the dummy's clothes, waiting on the porch and jumping up when they ring the doorbell.
For Halloween I usually give out treats for the first half of the evening and then go out to parties later in the night. I know two people with birthdays on Halloween who throw some great bashes.
Fall is my favorite season. Its not too hot or too cold. Just in between where a light jacket will do. And nature paints beautiful murals al around with the spectacular changing of the leaves.

We've kinda slackened during the years of decorating for Samhain/Halloween. Never enough time or money to do so.

One time my husband went all out. His sister gave him jack-o-lantern lights, he decorated the window closest to the street, bigger jack o lanteren in the middle with misc stuff beside it.

I spent about 6 hours carving my two pumpkins this year! They turned out awesome though. :) We go all out with the decorating. Window decals, hanging pumpkins, skulls, ghosts, dracula, & Casper. I have a skeleton and Frankenstein "chained" to the twoposts outside, 3 orange lawn bags with pumpkin faces on them in the garden, witches, ghosts and pumpkin lights in the garden. Various other lights, signs and lanterns abound.

I'll probably get dressed up and hand out candy tonight and I may be going to a Haloween party tomorrow night.

Happy Halloween Everyone and Welcome Annette!!! I hope you all have a blessed Samhain.

Today is starting out beautifully here in the Northeast. Leaves are falling, a crisp chill in the air and decorations everywhere you look. Just a perfect day for Trick-or-Treaters to show up in abundance.

We have a huge pumpkin that will be carved this afternoon, seeds will be roasted and gobbled as we save this particular feast for this special day each year.

Annette, you have a wonderful article and you know I can't wait for all of your new books. Especially since I have read all but one of your books and that's only cause I can't get the darn thing. Thank you my darling for being here with us today. You my dear are Queen of the Witches and who better to celebrate with on this most blessed day.
huggs,
Terra

My house doesn't get completely decked out, but I have a lot of Halloween stuff and would buy more.

We do the cobwebs, pumpkins, bats. My husband gets to take our daughter trick-or-treating tonight, while I hand out the candy.

Your books sound great, by the way.

We didn't decorate much this year, although we usually go all out. My room is decorated year round because bats, vamps and Nightmare Before Christmas are my favorite things! We kept it simple and just decorated one table in the dining area- candles, wax bones and some pumpkins.

This year we are combining Dio De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), Samhain, and Halloween all into one long weekend festival. My children came home from school a few days ago and said that they learned about the Day of The Dead and they wanted to cook food for Papa, who died last year on Nov. 5. We decided to cook for all those loved ones that have passed and we had a blast trying to remember favorite foods. So Saturday we will feast and remember our loved ones.

Then we have Samhain to celebrate- spending some time outside gazing at stars, finding Jupiter and Venus (close together and very bright) and we'll wrap it up with some candles. To keep everything kid friendly I tell them a story about the origins of Samhain.

And of course we have the usual trick or treating- my daughter is being a princess and my son is going as a zombie. We'll head over to the base (we're military) and ride some ponies, bob for apples and hunt down some candy! Then mommy and daddy will watch spooky movies when the kids fall alseep.

Blessings,

Hi Annette!! So nice to see you here today! Well, I'm a huge fan of vampires. So yeah, my house looks like I'm having a vamp convention...LOL But amongst them is the ghosts and witches...oh and I almost forgot the skeletons! Can't forget them.

Of course, I have two really cute pumpkins that my kids carved! One has a unibrow and ears and the other is mean looking! They are too funny!

Have a great day Annette! :)

Thanks for inviting me over to this site, Annette.

My grandfather always talked about Halloween being Hell Night. Knocking over outhouses and causing trouble all night long. Me, I think of it as a great kid holiday. Dressing up, fun food, trick or treating and just having a reason to be silly.

I start decorating on October 1st and put stuff up all month. This year, for our anniversary, Husband got me Halloween dishes! I am hoping to get a set of silverware to go with it.

I am looking forward to your new mystery since I already enjoy the witch series. Can you write faster??? :-)

ladyvampire, love it that you dress like the dummy and jump up. ROFLMAO.

Boo at the Zoo sounds found Akiern. Good for you.

Dina, I love Halloween lights. Just don't have time to put them up. :(

Rao, that's kind of happened at my house, too, but I get more than enough of the season in one day. As it is, they're climbing all over me.

By the way, I really made a big splash at the nursery school when I went to pick up Travis & Kelsey. I was all in black with a black cape and decorated witch hat, and I got there while the whole school was eating. Boy was I popular at lunch. I think Kelsey and Travis were quite proud that their Nana was the witch. Have to give them some attention. I'll be back.

This year we decided to do a snake made out of pumkins this year, it took 1 large long one for the head that we carved a snake face out of, and 20 smaller ones for the body all carved out with holes. Then we strung christmas lights through them and had it creeping threw the front lawn. Amd we also did a small cemetary. It looks cool at night.Have a wonderful night.

I don't do any decorating since my girlfriend and her husband and kids come over every year. We take turns walking areound with them and handing out candy. Afterwards we eat pizza together while watching a scary movie. My next door neighbor went all out this year, their front yard looks like on old creepy cemetary!

Hi Annette,

I loved your story about being Nana to your niece's kids! Now that my girls are 15 and 18, we no longer go trick-or-treating, but when they were younger their grandma (my mom) always went with us, no matter how cold it was. And unfortunately here in Oklahoma we've had more Halloweens that were cold and wet than otherwise! This year the kids have their own plans with friends, and I'm gonna stay at home with the dog. But at least he's great company!

I love black cats, pumpkins and witches. I'll be spending the evening passing out healthy treats (such as pretzels and goldfish) to the many kids in the neighborhood. Before I moved to Florida, I loved going trick or treating with my sister and her grandkids, what fun!
Halloween has always been my favorite holiday, since my birthday is the next day I feel like it's "my" holiday.

Witches! Witches! Witches on their brooms! I love them! Along with pumpkins (in any form, whether edible, carved or just sitting there)... I currently am in love with the purple lights strung up in my windows - they look fantastic, inside and out! We usually dress up as vampires on halloween, gotta be a little different than my normal witchy self! ;-) Keeps em guessin! I also put all my cool candles out - they look so festive... I noticed that I look at things differently in the fall, ordinary items in my house seem to give off new energies... Who knows, maybe it was a ghost I saw last night instead of a shadow from my cat!

macbeaner, I'd do more decorating if I had time, too.

Crystal, popcorn and caramel apples. Yummers. Great ideas, right up there with roasting pumpkin seeds.

Thank you Carol. I hope you get to read one of my books one of these days. I hope your daughter had a great night.

You are most welcome Annette. I was hoping you would be happy with what I had done.

Talk about exhausted, we had over 200 trick-or-treaters visit tonight. That's a lot of hot cocoa. They were so cute and I was surprised that we even had a few older kids. Turned out to be enjoyable even though my grandchildren are in North Carolina and this is the first time I have not been able to see them on Halloween. Hopefully Alicia will send me some pictures.

Sean & Anna, I love the idea of celebrating the Day of the Dead and cooking the food our loved ones loved. What fun that would be. My sympathy on your loss.

I love the kid friendly Samhain. Bright Blessings to you, Anna.

Ruth, I'm so glad you stopped in. Love the pumpking with the unibrow. LOL.

Hi Thatbrunette! The Halloween dishes must be fun. I have Christmas dishes, myself. I hope you had a great day.

I got to the nursery school early and caught the whole school at lunch. I was wearing my black cape and decorated witch hat, compliments of my friend the Diane, a high priestess, who runs Some Enchanted Evening in Massachusetts. The kids loved having a witch come in. My own two ran over laughing and kind of started a stampede. Everybody wanted to hug the witch. LOL.

Annette Blair said...

Hi Bunny, Yes candy corn rocks.

JBleau, I think the snake sounds so original and brilliant and with the lights inside it. wonderful.

Tetewa, I like the idea of getting together with friends on Halloween.

Aramena, I love the story of becoming Nana to my niece's children, too. I was so shocked that she asked, and so honored, and it hadn't been that long since their mom passed, (we raised our four kids together so it was a big loss) so it was sad, too, and we all cried together. For a long time I felt guilty for the joy they give me, then I dreamed about my SIL and she told me that this is the way it was always meant to be. She said to stop crying and enjoy them. My psychic friends have told me that it was a visitation, not a dream. I believe that. She keeps in touch, my SIL. I think it's because of her grandchildren.

Since my circle comes over to my house to celebrate the holiday, I put up lots of Witchy decorations. Last weekend at the NY Witch Fest I picked up a cool purple banner with a witch on it that has (battery powered) lights that blink on and off! We usually also have pumpkins and gourds, indian corn (which I grew myself this year) and other natural items. ANd the cats are naturally decorative! And we all gather around the bonfire (although this year I had to clear the snow away first) under the stars! You know my email:)

Estella, I miss opening the door to the goblins but my husband has happily taken over the fun. I wouldn't miss a minute of it this way.

Thank you Ellory for the compliment!

Hi Annette,
What a nice post you shared with us! One of my favorite things to do this time of year is to dress up for Halloween. This year I dressed as "The Cat's Pajama's"....I wore cat ears, tail, wiskers and pajama's...some thought I meant "The Cat's Meow"...well that would work too. I love this time of year as we gear up for 2 months of festivities, because everyone seems to set themselfs aside for the time being in order to help out their fellow man, in whatever way they can. I noticed this at work today, people were just happy...happy to see others dressed up and happy to be king to one another.
Happy Halloween to you!

animated Halloween decorations. Cool, Cat!

Slgemini, purple lights and vampires. Sounds wonderful. I agree with you that everything is more beautiful in the fall. It's my favorite time of year. I love the energy and the sunshine more than in the summer.

Lemonista, Mm. I could use some pumpkin pie right now. Wish we had some. At my niece's house, there were so many kids and families on the streets it was unbelievable. Their neighbors sit outside around campfires all dressed in costumes to wait for the trick or treaters. I never saw anything like it. They ran out of candy in less than an hour. Next year, they'll have to double up. Thank you for the compliment on my books.

Who asked if I could write faster? Four books a year is my limit. As a matter of fact, it was a bit too many. I think three a year is saner. LOL.

I love Halloween although my kids are getting older and we didn't do all of the decorating this year that I like to do. We have the gorgeous leaves too in NY state but they're gone now. We've already had snow! I hope you have a special Halloween with the little ones. They must be so cute! The holidays are more fun through their eyes. Looking forward to more books.

LOL, Blackroze. Love the glow in the dark skeletons.

Terra, I most certainly did appreciate it, but it was difficult to take it all in with Kelsey and Travis wanting my undivided attention which I usually give. I'm often on deadline, so when I give them a day, I give them my whole self. I'm so sorry that you didn't get to spend the day with your grandchildren, but, yes, pictures will help.

Annette Blair said...

Hi Deborah, The new banner sounds wonderful as does spending time with friends. I particularly love the idea of the campfire under the stars, snow and all. :) I hope you stayed warm.

darbyscloset, How brilliant you are. The cat's pajamas. Love it. I love the camaraderie of this time of year, too. At my niece's bank, they open for the employee's families to trick or treat from office to office. It was so much fun. And what do you know, I found an old high school classmates in one of the offices. LOL.

wrighty, they are beautiful my little ones. Thank you for the compliment on my books. No snow in Rhode Island and the leaves are yellow orange and bright red. Probably gone in New Hampshire but right here, they're perfect.
