To celebrate the launch of my humorous women’s fiction novel, Dating da Vinci, about a young widow searching for joy, I’ve been blogging here, there and everywhere about da Vinci, la dolce vita, and savoring the small stuff. On a podcast earlier this week, I was asked what my favorite junk food was, since my protagonist is an emotional eater with a penchant for junk food. (She and da Vinci even inhale a box of Dunkin’ Donut holes.) My answer: chocolate.
But that got me to thinking about the lighter side of
“savoring the small stuff.” Guilty pleasures. Things we may only indulge in every so often or as often as we can get away with. Here’s my Top 5 Guilty Pleasures. As of today, anyway.Lipstick Jungle. I gave Grey’s Anatomy the boot and I’m sticking with those well-dressed, well-heeled working girls. And the guys on the show aren’t too shabby, either.
Hats, shoes and handbags. For me, it’s pretty hard to call these thing
s “indulgences” because we sort of have to wear shoes in public and have something to carry our things in. Thing is, I’ve pared down. I’ve donated and donated and donated and yet I still have an impressive collection of HSH. As for the hats, I’ve always been a hat girl, and not just the cap in ponytail look that I reserve for walking. I love the vintage guy’s hats and all the cute hats you see in Macy’s and GAP. Only they aren’t there anymore because they are here, in my closet.Starbucks CafĂ© Mocha. They scored a few brownie points in my book my giving coffee away on election day, even though it’s probably a regular cup and not the freakin’ $4 cup that has become my once a week treat versus several times a wee
k treat due to the downturn in the economy. Blasted Wall Street!Home/Interior design magazines. No, I don’t “need” to spend a half hour flipping through Metropolitan Home or House Beautiful or the slew of others that cross my sleek black recliner and make their way into my lap. It’s like glossy crack. My house is already beautiful and it already belongs to a metropolis. I wouldn’t know where to put another vase or lamp or doo-dad if I tried. It’s escape, plain and simple. I think, if I didn’t live here, I’d live there. Right inside that picturesque spread of ridiculous white furnishings where no man, child or dog has ever lived.
Social networking. Sure, I could call it a professional investment of my time to log in multiple times a day to Facebook and Twitter, but let’s be rea
l. For every one “fan” that friends me, I’ve logged status comments a hundred times over. I adore that connection, though. Otherwise my days are mostly super shorty-short convos with my toddler that go something like this: Mommy, I want a peanut butter jelly for lunch. Me: Okay. Him: Come watch me scooter. Me: Okay. So now I get to have super shorty-short convos with Adults in this same fashion on Twitter and Facebook. See how much more enlightened I am? So friend me, add me and let’s have deep existential talks like the importance of guilty pleasures, but keep it to 140 characters or less."What are your favorite guilty pleasures?" Leave a comment and an email addy and I will pick one lucky commentor at the end of the day to receive a copy of "Dating DaVinci".

My guilty pleasures change all the time, but I would have to say right now, it's Kitchen Nightmares. I can't cook to save my life, but I'll watch Ramsay whip kitchens into shape all day long!
And now that the holidays are approaching, I'll be partaking of Peppermint ice cream. Yum!
Guilty pleasures...dark chocolate M&Ms, Grey's Anatomy, social networking (I don't even have a job to blame this one on) and going to the movies by myself.
My guilty pleasuress changes, I don't have a fav to single out, lol. It depends on the days and tastes. :)
My guilty pleasures are Bath and Body Works products, good chocolate, and my books.
Good morning Malena,
Guilty pleasures: Baklava once or twice a year, McDonald's Iced regular coffee w/ cream & sugar once a week, books several times a week, the Romance world on the internet several times a day. The internet has actually been a two part thing; good for me bad for the pocketbook. One I read less but I buy more! I use to never have a wish list & thanks to the great recommendations & interviews I had to start an Excel spreadsheet to keep up with my wants & needs.
Have a great day,
Susan

My guilty pleasure is running away with my husband this Saturday. We've been looking forward to a Caribbean cruise all year and we head for the ship in less than 48 hours! With all the horrible things happening in the economy, I'm thankful we scrimped and saved and paid for the trip up front. So maybe I don't have to feel quite so guilty . . .
Waving from behind a palm tree,
Emily
My guilty pleasures are the food network and eating cookies in the shower.
My guilty pleasures? I love yarn. I have to go through the yarn aisle every time I go to any store with yarn. Krispy Kreme donuts or Moose Tracks ice cream! Laying in bed reading a great romance novel, of course! On the internet, Fandom Secrets. And on TV, watching Chuck and Heroes with my brother's fiancee. : )
Ladies, WOW!!! Those are some great guilty pleasures? Cookies in the shower? Now why didn't I think of that? But I must say, Ramona, my protagonist in Dating da Vinci does do something in the shower, but interestingly enough, she's not alone...
Is it getting hot in here or is it just da Vinci???
Have a fab day!
Malena
Emily,
SOOO jealous about the Caribbean! Have a great time.
My guilty pleasure is a big bowl of popcorn, smothered in butter with garlic salt sprinkled on it. I make it that was cause noone else in the house will eat it. So then, IT'S ALL MINE!!! LOL
Oh, it has to be Boston Legal. I recently discovered the show (Yes, I'm years behind on television shows) because it's playing every day on a local cable channel. I record it and when the alarm goes off at 5am, I grab a lap blanket, flip on the coffee pot, and sprawl on the couch to start the day with an hour of Boston Legal before waking up my husband. Every other hour of the day is taken up with the regular job, writing, cooking, housework, etc., etc., but that first hour is MINE!!!!
Hi Everyone and Welcome Malena!! Another long day here and no end in sight. Sheesh I'm tired. Anywho, Malena your book is delicious so far as I just started it. I'll take a davinci any day if you have any extra hanging around.
Hmm.........my guilty pleasure would have to be pumpkin ice cream and baked apple dumpling ice cream mixed together with whip cream on top and cinnamon sugar sprinkled over the cream. When reading it would have to be frozen Reese peanutbutter cups. OMG they are so good and you don't end up with chocolate on the book pages. YUMM Thank goodness I have some in the freezer as we speak cause I gotta have some. See you guys later.
huggs,
Terra
oh, my current guilty pleasures include working in my pajamas until 2 p.m.; long, hot showers before bed; reading a kazillion blogs a day; reading poetry by levertov and roethke; fixing my kids cereal for dinner; eating cereal for dinner myself; buying fake tombstones for 75 off at walgreen's for NEXT Halloween; connecting with high school friends from my caney valley kansas days - on facebook, of course. long list. lots of guilty pleasures.
Dr Pepper. I know that I shouldn't drink soda. Empty calories = bigger butt. I just can't resist though. And Diet Dr Pepper does taste good but it's not the same.
What a fun and spunky interview!
My guilty pleasures are working out for along time at the gym, (when I sould of left there awhile before), dark choclate, surfing on the web, reading early into the morning hours.
Thanks for sharing!!! I'd love to read your book, I bet it is a hoot!

My guilty pleasures are books, books, and more books!
Someone has already said one of my big guilty pleasures - buying books.
Shows... guilty pleasure is the Food Channel. I love most all the shows.
When the kidlets were small - Sesame Street. I loved watching it with them. Yes, there was humor for adults. :)
As far as food - chocolate.
Well,
that would have to be Lindts dark chocolate truffles or cheesecake...
I would say some of my guilty plesures are chocolate, reading a good novel, and the TV show ER: mizzcasey02@gmail.com
I love blackcurrant gummies! (In the shower) and cuddling up with a pile of good books and gummies in bed!
