Michele Sinclair Guest Blogs

About Michele

In need of a creative outlet, I began writing novels after my second child was born. A voracious reader of romance books and a constant dreamer of romantic plots, my husband encouraged me to put my ideas to paper. I soon found out I loved it ... all of it!

I am a member of the
Romance Writers of America and of the Georgia Romance Writers.

In addition to writing historical and regency romance novels, I also build large-scale HO model trains, love to do huge cross-stitching pieces, relax on our boat, and decorate everything I can during the Christmas season.

Besides romance, I am a heavy science fiction reader and try to read at least two books a month—one science fiction and the other romance even when I am writing. I guess I just secretly desire to live in another place in time!

I really am a Sinclair!! Which during my last visit to the Highlands I learned I was mispronouncing (sink’ clare). As a consultant for 18 years, I have been an editor, have written numerous documents, and received various awards within my firm. I live in Atlanta, Georgia with my three favorite loves—my ever-loving and supportive husband and my two children.

Book Two, To Wed A Highlander, release date July 1, 2008

To Wed a Highlander, focuses on the second McTiernay brother, Colin, who is forced to marry his brazen, impetuous sister-in-law, Makenna, in order to protect the clan of his beloved, gentle dead wife.

Pride and unfamiliar desire guides much of their initial interactions as each wrestle with unexpected and intense feelings for the other. Conor and Laurel (from The Highlander's Bride) come back in this story and add to the lively interplay plaguing the Dunstan keep as Colin and Makenna discover the joy of their hidden, unknown passions.

"What a joy. Michele Sinclair's To Wed a Highlander hits a high note immediately and never lets down. This novel will give you the ride of your life". Romance Junkies – 5 stars

"Don't miss the whirlwind evolution of Colin and Makenna's marriage and leadership. If you read ... Highlander's Bride you will be pleased to meet up with many of the characters you remember from that story." Armchair Interviews

An arranged marriage…Makenna Dunstan has never needed a man’s protection before. But when her father’s failing health places the safety of the clan her hands, she has no choice but to marry Colin McTiernay. Fearing the emotions Colin awakens in her, she finds herself succumbing too easily to his lingering kisses and warm caresses. Yet she wonders if she can truly trust this highlander who is quickly stealing her heart.

Ignites an insatiable desires…
A highlander from birth, Colin McTiernay knows the Dunstan clan dislikes him, especially the laird’s youngest daughter. But he is determined to save the lowlanders from their enemies even if that means marrying the willful and impetuous Makenna. Book Three, Highlander’s Promise, release date Fall 2009

Set in the early 14th century Scottish Highlands, it is the story of the third McTiernay brother, Cole, who saves Ellenor Howell, an Englishwoman haunted by a horrible mistake, from a lonely life, only to realize it is she who needs to rescue him.

The Highlander’s Promise, won second place in PASIC 2008 Book of Your Heart Contest

An unwanted rescue…
Ellenor Howell’s perfect world unraveled in one terrifying night and she vows to piece together a new future, one that is safe and far from the reach of any man. Attempts to marry her off have failed and she is weeks away from fleeing England and her nightmares, when a hulking giant arrives, determined to take her to his brother’s home. With each ploy she devises to escape her captor, the infuriating Highlander is one step ahead, and her desire to leave the safety of his arms wanes. For inexplicably, whenever the man is around, her fear of being touched disappears and she remembers what is like to be wild and carefree. She wants her freedom, but with each minute that passes in the scowling Highlander’s presence, Ellenor begins to realize that what she really wants is the one thing she can’t have…his heart.

Bound to a promise…
Cole has good reason to despise Ellenor Howell. She is not only English and someone he is honor bound to hate, but she is proud of it. She is also aggravating, stubborn, and enjoys challenging everything he says or does. It should have made it simple for him to stay away. Instead, he finds himself drawn to her, as she continually understands him in ways no one else does. But as he helps free her from the memories of her past, his desire for the tawny-haired beauty grows, and he rediscovers pieces of his soul he thought forever dead. As their time together draws to an end, he must make a choice…forsake a solemn promise he made long ago committing him to a solitary life, or make a new one to his sworn enemy who has the power to open his heart and heal his wounds with love.

Hi Michele,

I have both of your books. Actually, the first one, The Highlander's Bride, is on it's way. I ordered the second one a few weeks ago and seen that they are related by brothers so I had to order the first one and it should be here by the middle of the week! I'm a huge fan of Highland romances so I'm really looking forward to reading your books!

I love decorating for Christmas also. I've already started. I do a little every week until Thanksgiving. The tree is the last thing, which we do after Thanksgiving dinner.

I don't read much Science Fiction but I do read Fantasy. I like to add one here and there. I just started a Lois McMaster Bujold book, The Hallowed Hunt. She's a fabulous fantasy writer!

Hi Michele, I'll have to keep an eye out for your books! I've just gotten into the "Highland" genre in the last few months and am loving it.

I am working on your "Highland's Bride" right now! I'm curious: as a Regency writer myself, I find research for Great Britain is fairly simple, but as your novels are set in Scotland, does that make it more difficult to keep them historically accurate?

Good Morning Everyone and Welcome Michele!! I love the article and your books look so yummy Michele. I love highlander books. Nothing like a good romance to bury your woes.

I hope everyone has a great day today. We are finally cold here in the Northeast. Gotta love winter when you have the hot flashes.
huggs,
Terra

I have excerpts of my books on my website - some have chapters. I just finished a contest (I do good giveaways...) but will get ready to do another early next year.

Oh - my books are FEEL good books. I write Congressional reports for a living (boring) and tedious. I once was told that I don't write at a "high enough level", but I disagree. My goal is to write to women who want to read and get involved with a story and see it in their head. I don't want anyone to stop every few sentences and have to reread things so that they can understand the sentence and its intent. Sometimes I like that - usually in my science fiction stuff - but not in my romance :)

Someone told me that I tend to write strong female leads. And I have to agree. My third book (and probably the best so far -- I'll have an excerpt of it posted by this weekend now that I am out of contracts -- ) I almost had to scrap and start all over and it was because I realized halfway through that I just didn't like my leading lady at all. She was a whiner, a complainer. And she had reason, but I noticed that I had her reacting to her situation in a distasteful way. I sat back and really examined who she was (yes my characters talk to me) and realized that she was a survivor and that was not how survivors responded...send me an email if you want the excerpt. She's fun. And so is Cole.

My favorite characters of the Highland series are Conor (just because of how he responds and is continually mystified by his wife) and probably Conan.

Conor is the first book. This book does NOT have a complicated, or even really and originally plot. But the interaction between the characters is totally fun where you will laugh out loud. But these characters are the cornerstone of the series so I couldn't "mess them up with flaws" too much. But these two will show up in every story with MAJOR scenes and plots and you will get to see what happens AFTER the story. Which I just love.

Conan - He is the second to the last and he is the brilliant one who enjoys women, but doesn't believe that any can challenge him intellectually. Seeing how he "meets his match" is absolutely a delight. (Have you ever met a someone who you believe under all those irritating arrogant layers, is a nice guy? And you just wish that you could be around the day that someone takes him down a peg or two and reveals the pretty decent person underneath? - This story is for you.)

Letitia - to your question about historical accuracy and Scotland. I love Winston Churchill's THE HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH SPEAKING PEOPLES. This will seem daunting, but it is great to understand the history and the political setting of the country and the peoples. Now little cultural things you have to do research on. Also, I started writing as a dare from my husband (little did he know), so I have become more and more research intense as I continue to write (on book 7 now).

I just got asked to do a Christmas series and I have spent oodles of hours learning about King Henry II. What a FASCINATING man and his wife!?! COOL woman and these two will be integrated into the story (Twelfth Knight unless the publishers change it and they probably will....). Everything I say about them - from dress to hair to Henry's preference for eating standing up because he didn't want to waste time - is all accurate.

Oh and Letitia -

There is a GREAT group in the RWA - Hearts through History - and they are terrific about answering questions when you cannot find information. Also they have a great research site. Beaumonde for Regency is just phenomenal as well. I have a lot of reserach sites on my website for both medieval and Regency.

I have also set up some personal research things - like I have a English to Gaelic dictionary/phrase thing I have put together over the years that is nearly 1000 PAGES long. But now I can find pretty much what I looking for much quicker. I did the same thing for Regency, but it is not as robust...

Oh another random comment about me. Worst question is when I am asked about a historical romance writer. I don't read them anymore. I don't read them when I am writing. I will read contemporary or paranormal, but I have to stay away from historical because I find I either start self-doubting my writing abilities (because their book is SO much better...) or it changes the voice of my characters. Like if my guy is aloof and withdrawn but the book I am reading is about someone who is the driver, the force behind things I somehow adopt a little of this and my character changes. I don't mean to, but I noticed early on that it happens so I just stopped pretty much reading historical, especially of the genre/time period I am writing.

Oh Christmas this year will be SOOO different for me. I decorate, literally everything and this fall we had a house fire and lost the kitchen. we are still undergoing remodeling and everything is such a mess. I just can't get my head wrapped around the fact that I won't have my traditional Christmas...but hey, I am going to have one heck of a new kitchen!

Michele, your picture is beautiful! And so great he encouraged you to pursuit your dreams to write. Highlanders are so good to read! Those definitely have me escaping within the book and the time period! I do tell myself I want to go to Scotland to see the castles! Whatever is still up! But for me it all still exists! And looks like you have more coming for us with them set in Scotland. As you love regency you indicated, do you too want to write that setting and all?

I love reading a variety of genres in romance and also enjoy historical mystery series and Urban Fantasy. I used to read alot of straight suspense and easily got burned out in them, but once I discovered romance, I found totally what I was missing in my reads. Since I love fantasy romance, I do want to check into a fantasy series. Most I read were ebooks, and not much I've seen with either romance or a romance theme within the series. I wouldn't know where to start. But I go anywhere with my reading (except horror and inspiration). I find variety in romance genres is fun reading!

Who are some of your favorite authors and books from the Scotland/Highlander theme?

Its really great meeting you!!! I am excited on your books.

I kept wondering how I missed these books because I have been getting the debut books with Zebra (I think it was a fabulous idea to do this, I've met so many wonderful reads and auto buys). So I went to my shelf and found these! I missed reading them. I shall change that now. I can't wait to read these! I'm glad we got to chat!

Thanks too to Yankee!

Hi. I am an Atlanta girl, too.:-)
Your highlander books sound great. Do they need to be read in order or do they stand alone?
