What makes a hero?
Last week, I watched the remarkable events of the “Miracle on the Hudson” unfold. Since my DH is a private pilot, is employed in the travel technology field and we love to travel, we’ve logged a lot of hours in the air. Trust me when I tell you ditching in the river is no one’s first choice. But the US Air pilot “Sully” made it look easy.
Everyone in the media was hailing Sully as a hero and pilots in general certainly possess heroic qualities. Being a pilot requires intelligence, a cool head and physical courage. All things we look for in a hero.
But Sully not only dead-sticked a nearly impossible water landing, he walked the plane twice and was the last person off the sinking craft. When I heard that—well, all the small hairs on my arms stood at attention and I experienced a full-body shower of glorybumps. I was responding to the strongest hero trait of all.
Self-sacrifice.
More than a hot bod, more than a quick wit, if a hero will sacrifice himself, his goals and dreams for the sake of others, we are drawn to him.
Sully hasn’t given any interviews, but I managed to catch Lucian Beaumont, the hero in my upcoming release, Vexing the Viscount. Here’s what my Georgian hero had to say:
Emily: What do you think about the “Miracle on the Hudson?”
Lucian, Viscount Rutland: I’m still agog about the miracle of flight! But that pilot chap certainly is a “top-of-the-trees” type, a regular out and outer. Captain Sully definitely walks the hero’s path. Yet I hear he says he was merely fulfilling the expectations of his station, or words to that effect. Commendable, that.
Emily: And yet you are acting in ways not in keeping with your station. I understand you’re excavating an ancient Roman ruin you discovered on your family estate. Rumor has it you’ve even stooped to (shudders in horror) physical labor. Tell me, milord, just why are you so keen on mucking about in the dirt?
Lucian, Viscount Rutland: I know it’s not fashionable, but a little honest sweat never hurt anyone. In fact, if one removes his shirt, physical labor can actually be quite pleasant. I highly recommend sunshine on a man’s bare back.
Emily: (fanning myself, imagining Lucian without his shirt) Still it shows a level of determination not often seen among the nobility. Why is finding this treasure so important to you?
Lucian, Viscount Rutland: My father was caught up in the South Sea Bubble and lost the family fortune a decade ago. I hope to restore them. When one is born to privilege, one is also born to responsibility. We have retainers and crofters on our country estate who will benefit from increased investment in our holdings.
Emily: But I sense this dogged determination of yours smacks of a more personal motivation.
Lucian, Viscount Rutland: Losing all that money has . . . affected my father deeply. To be honest, I fear for his mind.
Emily: And you hope a restoration of your fortune will also restore his mental health.
Lucian, Viscount Rutland: Exactly.
Emily: Taking care of others. Then you too are doing more than “merely fulfilling the expectations of your station.” You’re walking the hero’s path yourself.

Lucian, Viscount Rutland: (smiling slowly) If you say so. (smile replaced by a scowl) If I can keep that meddling Daisy Drake from placing obstacles in my way.
Emily: Trust me, milord. You’re going to enjoy some of those “obstacles.”
Lucian, Viscount Rutland: (grinning wickedly) As you are my author, I’ll hold you to that. Now if you will excuse me, I believe Miss Drake is reassembling some rather naughty Roman art and I’m certain she needs my help.
Emily: Pace yourself, Lucian. And I hope you’ll all enjoy Lucian’s story as he “walks the hero’s path.”
Thanks for having me, here at YankeeRomanceReviewers! I’m giving away a FREE copy of Vexing the Viscount to one lucky commenter.
So tell me. Who is your favorite fictional hero?

Does Rhett Butler count as a hero??? :)
These types of interviews are fun to read! Thanks, Emily and Lucian ;).
My favorite fictional character is Daemon Sadi from the Black Jewels Trilogy. His dedication to Jaenelle and all that he suffered and his perseverance made him such a great and complicated man.
I live in Charlotte and one of my co-workers was on that flight that crashed into the Hudson River, so it was been a very emotional time for me. I'm not even sure I have a favorite fictional character.
Your hero sounds pretty fantastic, but I have to say I'm partial to Captain Jack Sparrow, even though he's movie-based. I like how he keeps everyone guessing - even himself at times - and how he plays at double-crossing in order to actually save Will. Unconventional? Yes. But I like that in my heroes.
My favorite Fictional hero, hmmm. I have to say that I tend to lean towards the Heroes that are not actually Heroes in most peoples eyes but definitely that of the heroine. So my favorite Hero has to be Heathcliff. He is a brooding lost soul who is suffering at a great cost to himself and all those around him, yet he loves and gives with all that he has...

PS Love the interview between you and Lucian.
Wonderful post, Emily, and I enjoyed your lively exchange with Lucian. I do love men from the Georgian and Regency eras. And Victorian times. And the Old West. Okay, so I love my heros!
A favorite? It's usually the one I'm reading (or writing :)) in the moment. I'm drawn to Captain Jack Sparrow for the reasons Margay mentioned. If I had to name an all-time fav, it's just about any character that Cary Grant played. I espicially loved his Father Goose.
VEXING THE VISCOUNT sounds wonderful, Emily! My best wishes on a wildly successful career!

Dear Emily, how does one choose a favorite when there are so many?! All right, I'll try for one from historical romances (and yes, I'm being so predictable for selecting a reformed rake...) Sebastian from THE DEVIL IN WINTER by Lisa Kleypas.
I've posted this on Win A Book. No need to enter the contest.
Well,
Lucian is already up there as a favorite :)
I have to get myself a copy of Vexing soon :)
I also love Jack Sparrow.
And I love Zarek, of Dark-Hunter fame. He's a real baddie.
I would have to say Jamie Fraser from the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon.
stacie_vaughan@hotmail.com
Hi Emily,
I'm going to have to say Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird.
And then Dageus MacKeltar from Karen Marie Moning's The Dark Highlander. (sigh) Two very different men but I had a hard time choosing. :)
I loved your interview with Lucian. My Hero is whoever I am reading abut at the moment. The Regency era is one of my favorites.
I have to agree with MJ! Rhett Butler will always hold a special place in my heart. But the most memorable character for me is Brandon Birmingham from The Flame and The Flower. It was the very first romance novel I read and I even named my middle son after him LOL!
I love it when a character is interviewed by the author! Lucian sounds DIVINE! And are you going to sell tickets to watch him excavate sans shirt?
I love Sebastian Dain from Lord of Scoundrels. So outwardly confident and so inwardly insecure.
And I love Kylemore from Claiming the Courtesan. He evolved and grew so much in that book and was willing to do whatever it took to claim his Verity.
St. Vincent from Devil in Winter - Tried so hard to appear the cad and ended up taking a bullet for his wife.
Hi, Emily!
My favorite hero has to be Erith from To Tempt the Devil, by Anna Campbell. I love a hero that is strong and confident, but who is not afraid to admit to his weakness, the heroine. ;)
Great blog!
Rhett Butler definitely counts as a hero. In fact, he may be the first "bad boy" of the previous century. And Heathcliff may have been the first one of the 19th century. Both of them are hero material because of their single-minded devotion to the heroine.
Tammy, I'm so glad your co-worker is safe!
Bridget--Thanks for posting this on Win A Book. This ongoing blogtour will be giving away a VEXING THE VISCOUNT at a different blog each day till the release date February 24th. If you'd like my itinerary, please visit www.emilybryan.com.
Oooo, ladies, you are naming sooo many of my favorites. We love rakes, brooding troubled males, secretly vulnerable tough guys, and quietly upright men who do the right thing even when it's hard . . . So many heroes, so little time! Sigh!
Rhett Butler is my first choice for favorite hero. BTW, has anyone else read 'Rhett Butler's People'? If you are a fan of GWTW, you'll like this different view of Rhett, Scarlett and a few others.
Emily, I think Lucian will rank right up there for #1 favorite fictional hero. But he may have to knock Gabriel off the throne since he is there right now. LOL
Good blog. What makes a hero? Yes, their willingness to do what must be done, even at the risk of their own lives.
Oh Margay had to mention Captain Jack Sparrow. Now my knees have gone all rum-soaked. My my, that scallywag is a hero at heart, under all the scallywaggedness.
Thanks for mentioning two of MY heroes, Karen.
I just have to share what's happened to one of my other heroes--Trevelyn Deveridge from DISTRACTING THE DUCHESS.
He's been tapped for an RT Reviewers Choice nomination for a BEST K.I.S.S. AWARD. (Knight in Shining Silver Award) What fun!
Fun interview! Can't wait to read the book.
great interview, Emily. I like Rhett Butler as hero to me. Keep going writing good books like Lucian
As always a great interview : )
*It's fun getting to know more about one of my favorite authors*
Yes that was pretty assume of Sully! This was a fun "interview" - thanks! Hard to pick one hero as they change with all my reading!! From last years reads I would pick Valec from the Study Series by Maria V. Snyder. But Historical Romance is my fav genre and there are sooo many good heros!
Hi Emily,
I love following your trail! So many new things and places, although this is one of my favorite blogs!
My favorite hero is Sebastian from Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas.
Afternoon Everyone and Welcome Back Emily!!! Love the interview. OMG you are too funny and your hero is so spunky. Whew! Love that in a man.
As for my favorite hero I would have to say it is usually the one I'm reading about at the moment. I'm sorry I can't just pick one but Margay is right and Capt'n Jack Sparrow is just to delicous not to consider. Right now it's Dylan in Heidi Betts new book that's coming out in February. Want to read about him come back on January 27th as Heidi will be here. Can you imagine a man giving a woman 12 orgasms in one night. Holy Moley Sinbad! Bad Heidi.
I know I'm going to have to get your book Emily cause I never pass up a Regency. Love them to pieces and I'm sure Lucian is going to tickle my fancy really nicely. Hmm....get my bib ready and will have to warn hubby before I start that one.
Sorry I'm so late coming on but Verizon just was here and gave new new internet access. Been down all morning. Anyhow I should be good to go now so enjoy.
huggs,
Terra
Love Lucian's attitude to taking off shirts. Exemplary. :)
Hmmm, picking a favourite hero, that's tough! And not only because I'm bad with names... but I always like a hero who's sweet and smart and loveable, but thinks he isn't worthy of love - just begging to be saved by a heroine!
And I'm very fond of Trevelyn Deveridge, he was so much fun!
What a great interview Emily, I loved it!
I am not sure I have a favorite fictional character, but my favorite book of all times would have to be GWTW so maybe Rhett is my favorite hero.
I love tortured heroes and two of my favorites is Nick from Lisa Kleypas' "Worth Any Price" and Robert from Gaelen Foley's "The Duke."
If Lucian does figure out a way to restore the family fortunes, would he give me the secret? A really good fictional hero is Ian Graham in Song in Stone by Walter H. Hunt. He went back to the 14th century to find the key to the healing music in Rosslyn chapel. What an incredible book. Thanks for a great interview
A fun interview, thanks!
My hero right now will be one from Anne Gracie's Perfect series, but I can't decide which one, they are all great! Perhaps Dominic Wolfe...
I'll have to say two of my favorites are Linnea Sinclair's Gabriel Ross Sullivan and her heroine Chasida Bergren.
Ray
Oh boy, by far my fav is "Lucas Davenport" in the "Prey" novels by John Sanford. He is just so dang sexy, smart and rich!!!! ;-*
Thanks for asking!
Darby

if one removes his shirt, physical labor can actually be quite pleasant
Mmm, pleasant for who ;)
My favorite hero... Yeah, that's unfair to ask. Maybe who's my favorite today? I'm in the middle of STAKED by J.F. Lewis. Eric, the vampire protagonist, is a monster, literally and figuratively. He eats innocents, cheats on his girl, goes into blackout rages... But he'll risk his life -- er, his undeath to save his daughter. I can see a hero in there.
I agree with MJ. Rhett Butler, for sure!
Great interview, Emily and Lucian! My hero is Sherilyn Kenyon.s Acheron. His life story was captivating and inspirational.
Rhonda :-)
Fun interview Lucian and Emily.
One of my favorites is Derek Craven, Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas. He made a climb up from the streets, aggressive and dangerous, but so protective and caring one he finds love. He's still alph and dangerous to others, but happier now, and does many good deeds behind the scenes.
My favorite hero is Roarke from JD Robb's Death Series.
What a fun interview to read. Thanks Emily!
Favorite fictional hero - it's hard to choose! I really like Curran from Ilona Andrews' series.
Great choice of topic! I love it when ordinary men in extraordinary circumstances do heroic acts.
One of my favorite heroes from a book is Sheridan Drake from Seize the Fire.
Hi Emily,
Just checking in for the day. I agree with the hero qualities. I can't think of a favorite hero at this late hour, but Rhett Butler is not it.
Julie
Thanks for having me here, Terra. I had a ball. Everyone has named some wonderful heroes. It's hard to pick just one.
And it would be hard for my DH to pick just one winner, if he didn't do it by his own totally random method. The winner today here at Yankee Reviewers is: LESLIE! Please contact me through my website with your mailing info.
If you didn't win, take heart! There's another chance to win today at NightOwl Romance Blog. They've just posted a fabulous review for my VISCOUNT. He's a Reviewers TOP PICK!
Hope to see you at the next stop on the tour!
Im a Jack Sparrow kind of gal.
I love Eric Northman from the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.
