On Tuesday, January 27, my newest book is due to hit book stores everywhere. A Highlander of Her Own is the fourth book in my Daughters of the Glen series and, truth be known, I think I’m more excited about this release than any since my debut book.
Why is that?
Honestly, after thinking this through for hours, I finally decided it comes down to two issues – the ending and the characters in this story.
First off, I am definitely a Happy Ever After gal. I work hard to make sure my main characters get the happy ever after they deserve in each of my books. But, I have to admit, I’m pretty jazzed about the ending of A Highlander of Her Own. It came to me in sort of a flash as I neared the end, and I’m anxious to see what readers think of it.
The second reason I’m so fond of this book has to do with my characters. Now, all my books are character centered. I begin each one by deciding who my hero and heroine are, what problems and obstacles they face and how they fit together. It’s only at that point that I really start to work on the story. In fact, their stories develop out of who they are.
I have to picture my characters in my head. I have to hear them. Maybe it comes from being an only child and having spent all those years entertaining myself with just my imagination and my Barbies! But now it’s how I write. Sometimes the characters are easy to see and hear; sometimes they’re not. Whichever the case, for the time I spend writing that book, they are as alive in my imagination as people I actually know.
The more ‘alive’ they are, the easier it is to write their book.
After finishing Soul of a Highlander, the third book in the series, I knew I needed to follow up with Caden MacAlister’s story. I met Caden for the first time while writing Soul and by the end of that book, I already liked him and really felt concern for what his future would bring. He was a secondary character always there to take charge or lend a supportive hand. When I pictured him in my mind, it was a picture of man with a quick wit and a knowing smile. But I knew that what he’d gone through toward the end of that story would have to have a huge impact on the way Caden viewed life from that point forward. I also knew it would take a very special woman to be his match.
From the moment I began work on this book, Ellie Denton, the heroine in A Highlander of her Own, just clicked for me. I could see her. I could hear her voice. I think she’s the sort of woman I’d be friends with if she lived next door. It was easy to picture her home and the setting she grew up in… it was patterned after my relatives’ homes in rural Texas, particularly the one ranch I spent a few months on between my junior and senior years of high school.
I suspect this relationship with my heroine – how easily I could see and hear her – is what excites me so much about this particular book. I’m anxious for readers to meet Ellie and watch her story play out to see if they connect with her in the same way I did.
My question for all the readers out there is this: Are there books you’ve read where a particular character resonated with you? If so, are those stories that stuck with you long after you’d finished the book? Leave an answer and your email addy in the comment section to be entered to win one of two copies of "A Highlander of His Own" being given away.
I hope you’ll all be waiting to grab your copy of A Highlander of Her Own on Tuesday, January 27 and, once you do, I’d like to invite you to stop by my website at www.MelissaMayhue.com and leave me a message in the ShoutBox, letting me know what you think of the book. You can also contact me through my MySpace page at www.myspace.com/MelissaMayhue. I’d love to have you all come friend me and let me know your thoughts about the series!

A Highlander of Her Own
Book Four
TEXAS, PRESENT DAY. Ellie Denton’s world has spiraled out of control. A strange new birthmark, animals talking to her, and her mother’s ex-husband laying claim to the family ranch have her thinking life can’t get more complicated. But Ellie doesn’t know the birthmark’s connection to her Faerie ancestors. Complicated takes on a whole new meaning with her innocent wish to find her true love.
SCOTLAND, 1304. Caden MacAlister has more trouble than he can handle. With his brother held for ransom and the laird missing, the last thing he needs is another problem. But the Fae have other plans.
A mysterious woman shows up in his stables, sent by Faerie Magic to find her true love. Fighting his attraction, Caden insists she’s meant for one of his brothers. With his history, he has no desire for a woman in his life—especially a woman sent by the Fae.
Only the magic of the Fae can determine whether Ellie will find a Highlander of her own...

Melissa, I'm thrilled about the release of A HIGHLANDER OF HER OWN. Time travel with a Highland Scot and the Fae? What could be better?
There are characters and stories who have stuck with me long after reading the books. Whitney in WHITNEY MY LOVE was one, and there are scores more. I love it when I finish the book and then catch myself wondering what those characters are up to now. :)
Congratulations, and best wishes for MANY more wonderful books!

Hi Melissa! I love your series, was captured by the first book and now I won't give it up :)
A few characters have resonated with me over the years. When I'm feeling down or tired, or when I'm home sick, I'll pick those books up to read a passage again because they make me feel good. It's like comfort food for the heart!
Keep the stories coming, and thanks so very much for being a blogger here on Yankee Romance. It is such fun reading what you write! Cheers!

There have been characters and story lines that have totally stuck with me. And those are the books I go back and reread all or parts of. Sometimes I will just wonder if the book or series had continued what they would be up to.
Your book sounds great, cant wait to read it.
Thanks!

Melissa, Congrats on the newest book! No, I don't think there has really been a character that i've had a special *bond* with that has stuck with me. There have been storylines that have really replayed in my head though. I'm with Donnas, sometimes I do wonder what they'd be up to at a later date. Which storyline changes. Right now It's Autumn Dawn's Darkland series, perhaps because she just made mass pb print.
Opps- forgot to leave my email!

Hi Melissa! Congrats on your upcoming release. Your enthusiasm is contagious. I can't wait to pick up "A Highlander of Her Own!" Btw, that's a gorgeous cover.
There have been heroines, heroes and storylines that have stayed in my thoughts long after I finished their books. One of those books was "A Knight in Shining Armor" by Jude Deveraux. I read the story many years ago, when it was originally published, but it still lingers in my mind to this day.

Hi Melissa,
I love your Highlander books and am now really excited to read A Highlander of Her own...I'm jazzed to read the ending!
Yes, there is one set of books where two characters resonated with me. Daemon and Jaenelle from the Black Jewels Trilogy. I reread those books every year. There is something very special and unique about them that I absolutely love and crave to read about them.
Good luck on your release day!!

Thanks for the wonderful welcome, everyone. Yankee Romance is always such a great place to come guest blog...mostly because of the wonderful readers!
Wondering about the big What If in books or series that haven't continued is something that's hooked me before, too. Even at the end of movies sometimes I find myself wandering down that 'what happened next' path. It's all part of our amazing ability to let our imaginations run wild and create our own stories!
The disadvantage there is when I allow myself to wander that 'what's next' path on a series that does continue, and then the author goes a totally different direction from what I had in mind. Of course, that's where some of the best reading surprises come from, too! :-)

Hi Melissa,
congrats on the release! I hope there will be many more books in your wonderful series!
There are some characters who have stuck with me too, I often reread their stories and wonder what will happen to them in the future... Loretta Chase has some of them.

I'm excited about the new release now, too.
I can't think of any characters that have really resonated with me, which probably means there haven't been many.

I've posted this on Win A Book. No need to enter the contest.
Hi Melissa. Congratulations on your new release. It sounds great.
I have had several characters and stories that stuck with me after reading the books.
I'm always looking for new authors and series to read, looks like I'll have to check them out! tWarner419@aol.com
Good Afternoon Everyone and Welcome back Melissa!! For those of you who haven't had the chance to read this series you are really missing out. For those of you that have you know exactly what I mean. Just got to love these books.
The characters that have stuck with me through many, many years is from Pride and Prejudice. No matter how many times I read the book or watch the different versions of the movie I just can't seem to get enough. I do tend to enjoy most characters that I come across with the exceptional few but these will always stick out in my mind as almost part of me.
I do hope all of you will have a great day. I have some serious reading to do and a few reviews so will be in and out. Enjoy!!
huggs,
Terra
I love your Highlander Series and am anxiously awaiting A Highlander of Her own.
The character that has stuck with me the longest is Skye O'Malley by Bertrice small.
I do have a very special character. That character is Marius de Romanus from Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. I think he's wonderful and he's actually been quite the inspiration to me. The field I have a degree in was because of him.

Hi Melissa. This sounds wonderful! Best wishees on the release!! Should the series be read in order? I love series. Yes some characters stick with me... right now it is Yelena and Valec from the Study series by Maria V. Snyder. I listened to them last summer and really liked both characters. I also like Sookie Stackhouse from the vampire series by Charlaine Harris... not historical (which is my #1 fav) but lots of fun... she is so fiesty!
I'd love to read this.
I've had cahracters from years ago that I still identify with...depends on what's happening in my life.

Thanks!
Hi Melissa, I was hoping for Caden's story after reading Soul. One character I 'd like to see more about is from Soul of a Guardian, also, hoping to see more about Wyn; in fact, I have a certain suspicion about him.
Hi Melissa
There have been a few characters just went inside my head and never came out. Like for instance both characters Jordan Townsende and Alexandra Lawrence in Something Wonderful by Judith McNaught. The characters were very well drawn you could almost feel them living and breathing.

As far as reading in order, I wouldn't say it's necessary, since the stories are self-contained, so to speak :-) -- but I do think it's more fun to read in order since so many characters get introduced.
PamP - Wyn is an interesting character, isn't he? I suspect he'll be back in another book somewhere along the line!
That's the thing about these secondary characters...they creep up on you and get under you skin... sometimes I have to be careful when I'm writing them because they have such interesting personalities and back stories, it would be easy to get sidetracked with them! :-)
