New Year goals, hopes, and wishes! by Alyssa Day
Thanks to Terra for inviting me to join the fun at Yankee Romance Reviewers!!
Today is the release of WILD THING, my fab anthology with Marjorie Liu, Maggie Shayne and Meljean Brook [http://www.amazon.com/Wild-Thing-Maggie-Shayne/dp/0425225445/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231041115&sr=8-3] so I probably should have blogged about wild things, but on the first day of back-to-school for the kids and the return of that 6:15 a.m. alarm clock . . . well, let’s say I’m not feeling all that wild. Except for coffee . . .
But I am in a “goals, hopes, and wishes” mood. 2008 was a rough year for me (and for a lot of people; for our whole country, but that’s a ‘whole ‘nuther story’ as they say). So 2009 is all about getting back on track and diving back into my writing in a huge way. So I’ve set some goals that may surprise you, because most of them have nothing to do with writing.
First, I plan to take care of me. GASP! I know, right? For a woman and a mom to even say that sounds so subversively selfish!! Take care of me?? Not the kids and the husband and the dogs (we have 4, we rescue pugs, it’s crazy, lol) and the house?
Well, here’s the thing. Taking care of me will give me more energy to take care of everyone else, and that’s something I seem to have forgotten for so many years. Healthy eating, exercise, and getting enough sleep (sleep? You’re asking. What is this word, sleep??) all make me healthy and strong enough not only to take care of everyone else, but to be more creative and able to handle the mental challenges of writing the best books I can.
Second, I plan to block out regular writing hours every morning – BEFORE anything else gets done. It’s too easy to get caught up in all the necessities of daily life and email and phone calls and then the writing gets pushed aside or even put off entirely. For example, today I wrote my chapter of my new book before I started working on this blog. Bonus? I get to feel great about myself and my progress all day instead of stressed about fitting in the writing before (my new, reasonable, not midnight) bedtime.
I mentioned hopes and wishes, too, and I can sum those up pretty easily: I wish for health and happiness for my family and for all of my readers. I hope my books will do well when ATLANTIS UNLEASHED and ATLANTIS UNMASKED come out in June and July. Most of all, I hope and pray that my husband and his Navy squadron will be safe when they go on deployment in May.
Happy New Year to everyone!! Please share one of your new year’s goals, hopes, or wishes with me and Terra will randomly select 4 winners from the comments–I’m giving away 3 autographed copies of Wild Thing and a tote bag. Thanks and have a lovely 2009!!!
