New Year goals, hopes, and wishes! by Alyssa Day

Thanks to Terra for inviting me to join the fun at Yankee Romance Reviewers!!

Today is the release of WILD THING, my fab anthology with Marjorie Liu, Maggie Shayne and Meljean Brook [http://www.amazon.com/Wild-Thing-Maggie-Shayne/dp/0425225445/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231041115&sr=8-3] so I probably should have blogged about wild things, but on the first day of back-to-school for the kids and the return of that 6:15 a.m. alarm clock . . . well, let’s say I’m not feeling all that wild. Except for coffee . . .

But I am in a “goals, hopes, and wishes” mood. 2008 was a rough year for me (and for a lot of people; for our whole country, but that’s a ‘whole ‘nuther story’ as they say). So 2009 is all about getting back on track and diving back into my writing in a huge way. So I’ve set some goals that may surprise you, because most of them have nothing to do with writing.

First, I plan to take care of me. GASP! I know, right? For a woman and a mom to even say that sounds so subversively selfish!! Take care of me?? Not the kids and the husband and the dogs (we have 4, we rescue pugs, it’s crazy, lol) and the house?

Well, here’s the thing. Taking care of me will give me more energy to take care of everyone else, and that’s something I seem to have forgotten for so many years. Healthy eating, exercise, and getting enough sleep (sleep? You’re asking. What is this word, sleep??) all make me healthy and strong enough not only to take care of everyone else, but to be more creative and able to handle the mental challenges of writing the best books I can.

Second, I plan to block out regular writing hours every morning – BEFORE anything else gets done. It’s too easy to get caught up in all the necessities of daily life and email and phone calls and then the writing gets pushed aside or even put off entirely. For example, today I wrote my chapter of my new book before I started working on this blog. Bonus? I get to feel great about myself and my progress all day instead of stressed about fitting in the writing before (my new, reasonable, not midnight) bedtime.

I mentioned hopes and wishes, too, and I can sum those up pretty easily: I wish for health and happiness for my family and for all of my readers. I hope my books will do well when ATLANTIS UNLEASHED and ATLANTIS UNMASKED come out in June and July. Most of all, I hope and pray that my husband and his Navy squadron will be safe when they go on deployment in May.

Happy New Year to everyone!! Please share one of your new year’s goals, hopes, or wishes with me and Terra will randomly select 4 winners from the comments–I’m giving away 3 autographed copies of Wild Thing and a tote bag. Thanks and have a lovely 2009!!!

Hugs,
Alyssa

Hi, Alyssa,
I hope you remember me from TeenLitAuthors. I certainly remember how kind you were when I first joined your group.
I read your two Teen books and am following your career with your Atlantis books. Glad to see you have an anthology out too.
Like you, I got side-tracked in 2008 but am now settled down. I have a fourth book (my first nonfiction) coming out in mid-2009. It's a book of celebrity interviews I'm co-authoring with Chase Von, a celebrity interviewer and poet/author himself.
My interviews with Clint Eastwood and Jane Russell (and other old interviews) will be included with Chase's interviews with up-and-coming new entertainers like Darcy Donavan and Kiara Hunter, to name a few.

My goal is to hit the best-seller list with this book, like you did with your Atlantis.

I really enjoyed your article/blog and see that we share many of the same goals.

Happy 2009!

Hugs - Betty Dravis

Very wise, Alyssa--particularly as moms, it seems incredibly selfish to talk about taking care of ourselves, though you're absolutely right: taking care of ourselves makes us more able to take care of everyone around us.

That's a goal for me, too. As is reassessing my priorities. I tend to get caught up in things that are time-consuming, but aren't of any real benefit. The idea is to cut out the energy drains so I can focus on what's important to me. It's easier said than done, though, and is more an ongoing effort than a discrete goal.

I wish for you a wonderful 2009, and that everything turns out even better than you hope it will.

Good luck with Wild Thing! It is on my Wish List. I am looking forward to the next Atlantis books, too.

I have a goal of taking better care of myself, too, but it's not going to be easy. My wish is that the economy will improve and we will get decent health insurance. Happy New Year!

Hi, Alyssa!

My primary goal for the new year is finishing with school. At least for a while! :)

Hi Alyssa,
First off, let me say how much I've enjoyed reading your books, especially the new Atlantis series. I'm so looking forward to continuing it this summer!

2008 was an awful year for me. I had a spinal fusion and two weeks later, my appendix ruptured! I've never been so sick of doctors and hospitals in my life! My son was injured in a wrestling tournament and then in a car wreck. In August, my oldest left for college and my youngest left for kindergarten. I was left at home, wondering what to do with myself.

My resolution for 2009 was to make it a better year. I need to take better care of myself and the lingering effects from both surgeries. I need to take time to spend with my kids and not just carting them around and doing FOR them. I need to continue to work on our finances in this horrible economy, so we come out stronger as the markets and our financial world stabilizes (hopefully!) I need to start doing something just for myself. After all, I can't give any more if I'm at the bottom of the barrel.

At the end of 2008, I got in touch with old friends that I hadn't seen in over 25 years on Facebook. WOW, that really changed my life! I'm determined to keep in touch with my new (old) friends and make the time to do something just for myself each week. To recharge my batteries and have a life, instead of just existing.

Good luck with Wild Thing. I can't wait to read it. I hope 2009 is the best year ever for you!

Hi Alyssa,
Congrats on the new book, I'm looking forward to reading it, and I'm patiently waiting for the next Atlantis book (one of my many new year resolutions). I'm also working on my procrastination issue and finishing up with nursing school. I hope 09 will be a great year for you and I wish you good Health, Love, and Happiness.

Happy New Year Alyssa! Can't wait for all your new books! :-)

My personal goals this year are to finish my first novel (Well, technically it's my second, but the first was rubbish and never made it past rough draft stage.) and get it published. Also to travel a lot more this year. It's one of my true passions and I haven't indulged myself near enough.

My dreams and wishes really boil down to just one: love. Ok, so there is an unfortunate shortage of yummy Atlanteans running around London these days, but I'm ok with human, just as long as he's yummy, confident, and most of all, makes me laugh 'til I pee my pants. Yeah, that'll just about do it.

I wish you abundance and prosperity in 2009!

Hi everybody!! Don't you love the blue hair? LOL. It doesn't always look like that but it does kinda go with my eyes . . . hee.

And too cute - the pic of the pugs! My pugs are here, if this works: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_g5tTWjIj8OI/SQhpioyYCvI/AAAAAAAAAMI/9OMm3gsvSl8/s320/DSC00968.JPG
having a bath.

Hmm. Guess that one didn't work. Maybe this? http://tinyurl.com/9xmnus

If not, I give up. Two are very good-looking, one is cute as a button, and one looks like a pug Marty Feldman, just FYI.

Hi Betty! Of course I remember you!! I'm glad to hear you're doing well! HUGE good luck with your celebrity book!

Hi Darla! I hear you on the time-suck problem. It feels some days like I've run all day long but accomplished nothing! Hamster on a wheel, anyone? That's why my new thing is to put the priority items first thing in the morning. We'll see how it works out. Today I had a night of coughing that kept me up and so I'm tired, plus I have to take the kids to the dentist at 11:30 and then lead a creative writing group at my daughter's school. So this had better be a productive three hours . . .

Alyssa Day said...

Hi Cynthya! I hope the economy will improve, too. I was listening to NPR while driving the kids to school and the news so often makes me very worried. Thank you for trying my books!

Hi Wendy! Good luck with school!

Hi Angie! Thank you so much for the nice words about my books! Wow, your 2008 sounds as bad as mine. I can really understand what a tough time you must have had. Sending you hugs and best wishes for a full recovery from the health issues and good luck with the battery recharging! I need some of that, too.

Alyssa Day said...

Hi Ann Marie!! I really appreciate your patience - my health issues sure got in the way of my book releases last year. One of many, many reasons I'm so glad it's over! 2009 is going to rock! Good luck with nursing school!

Hi Ghostpen! Ooh, a first novel and love! Those are two wonderful goals! May you have a wonderful year!

OK, on to my chapter so back later. Keep those comments coming!

Hey Alyssa! I think you've come up with some really great universal goals. They are really similar to my own!

I've made some other positive changes for 2009. I've found a great critique partner and we've formed a small five person group. It gives us a first and second round of reviews on our writing.

I am all for you staying healthy and happy in 2009 so you can keep writing. I am on pins and needles waiting for your Atlantis books to release this summer. Squeee!!! Ok I had to give into my inner fan girl for a moment.

Take care and happy blogging today

Good Morning Everyone and Welcome Alyssa!!! Thank goodness I feel better this morning as yesterday was the pitts. Oh well, we can't really expect to get away without being sick at some point.

Anywho, Alyssa I love the blue hair. It shows courage, strength, determination, independence and could be a brainstorm towards describing any of your heroine's in the Atlantis series. I happen to really like it and it looks really well on you. Just a word of caution not that I would expect you to ever try this. My son-in-law is a natural blonde about your coloring and decided to try Koolaid on his hair. Let's just say it was green for a long time. LOL!

As for my goals this year, I would like to continue helping out all authors new and old to promote their books and themselves to the readers and to help the readers see more of what is behind the writing process and how much our beloved romance authors put into each and every book just to please us.

Goals would be to stop procrastinating! What do you think Margay since we seem to be on the same page in that catagory? I know this won't happen anytime soon but I will put more effort into it.

Hopes, I can only say I do hope our new President will be able to help each of us overcome some of the hardships that have been niggling at us for some time now. I hope for more kindness to be shown from more people and less greed. Greed is one of the things that has made the economy such as it is.

To all of you, may you smile at the next person you see in the supermarket cause it might be the only smile they see and one smile can really change opinions.

I hope all of you have a wonderful day and good luck with your goals, hopes and wishes.
huggs,
Terra

Admiral Goals. I intend to start a totally new book while I wait to see if my agent can sell the two she has. I plan to schedule routine 'bookkeeping' maintenance and track all the writing-related things I do. A clean desk once a week! File folders. 3-ring Binders! And of course, all the 'good life' stuff- keep hitting the Y, make healthy eating choices, and hope hubby's job doesn't disappear.

Hi Alyssa,

Loved reading about your goals for 2009.

One of mine for 2009 is reconnecting with my kids. Life gets so busy transporting them from one place to another, doing homework, housework...I just want to set aside some time daily to sit down and just chat with them - so what if the living room is dusted - LOL. I want to try to spend some time with them doing things that they like to do - getting interested in their interests. They grow up so fast - I want to be remembered as the mom that was easy to talk to and really listened to their problems.

Hello Alyssa,

I'm really looking forward to reading about Justice, Alexios and their heroines this summer. Two stories back to back will be wonderful.

And yes, we need to take care of ourselves. Too often everyone else comes first and it wipes us out. And with your husband leaving it's especially important. My dh is retired navy and I don't miss those long deployments at all!

One of my hopes for the new year is that my family has continued good health.

Hi Alyssa,
congrats on the release! One more for my long wishlist...

My goal for this year is to spend more time with my family, and to read more books of course! I need more time for myself too....

My goals are to quit wasting so much time on nitpicky things and use it wisely.

Also too lose 25 lbs this year. I proved I could do it last year. And I've already lost 2. Yay!

Great goals. Good luck with them. One of my goals is to quit smoking, for real this time.
I have really enjoyed the Atlantis books I've read.

Hi Alyssa

I loved your Atlantis books and enjoy each one... I look forward to the new ones and now this anthology (now making a note to pick up).

Ahh... Goals..hopes... Wishes... The beginning of my dreams came true last year with two acceptances of short stories.. My goal is to continue with my writing - every single day (trying not to play too many card games / mahjongg on the computer) and keep sending them out.
Take care of myself and my two kitties and keep us slightly above the just barely keeping my head out of the water feeling. :)

Look forward to reading the anthology and your books.. Hugs and love to your hubby and his squadron. Hugs from my kitties to your puppies. :)

Enjoy the new year!

I liked what you had to say. I hope everything you wrote about comes to pass for you. As for me, my husband and I honestly can't remember the last time we had a "good" year. 2008 started out horribly but ended on an up beat. So my hopes, goals, and wishes are simply that the good outweigh the bad for us in 2009, and that the lows aren't as low as they've been.

Kate Douglas said...

Good morning from the left coast, Alyssa! Can't wait to read Wild Thing, and I commend you on your goals for 2009. It's so hard to remember to take time for ourselves, and I'm as guilty as so many other women of forgetting little things like eating right and going to bed at a decent hour. I think it's how we're wired...which makes it hard to change. Here's to a smart and healthy 2009--and I can't wait for more good books from one of my "most favoritist" authors!

one of my wishes is too travel more! mmmmmm, and to travel to new places and to be able to see more of them (japan, i am hoping that this year we can visit japan) and then ofcourse reading wise i am hoping i can read more of the tbr books (and also try to add less to the tbr pile, though that i don't know if it's possible or not) so it's very me, me. well half me, half others wise! :) i am hoping to get less angry and try to be more mellow and also try to listen more.

Hi Alyssa,
Besides the regular lose weight and save money, this year I added "take boxing lessons". I have a bag yet have never really learned how to box (where did boxing come from, I'm not real sure just a strange thing I picked up somewhere), and boxing lessons aren't jumping around here like your typical work out classes, so I have my work cut out for me!
Thanks for sharing your res's!

Hi Bridget. Thanks!

Hi Eden Glenn!! A good critique group is truly a gift, isn’t it? My CP lives in London so I’m going over to England this summer to spend a week with her. Can’t wait!! And thanks for the nice words on my books!

Hi Lisa! Ooh, organization is a great one. I went on a mad tV spree of that Clean House show while I was so miserably sick over Christmas and came out of it in a crazy “organize everything in sight” mood. My kids’ rooms have never been so neat! Closets and all! Next up is my office . . .

Hi Margay! Great goal! Good luck with your writing!

Hi Amberkatze! Nice goals – I’m really looking forward to a holiday that doesn’t involve work. All of my travel seems to be to conferences so we’re planning travel just for fun this year.

Hi Terra! I’m sorry you were sick, boy, do I feel your pain. Came down with the yuck the 22nd and didn’t get out of bed for 4 days. Still coughing so much I can hardly sleep. YUCK. LOL on the blue hair – yes, it was actually semi-permanent dye. Let’s just say a lesson learned . . . Back to blonde now though! It’s lovely of you to promote authors – we really REALLY appreciate it.

Hi Terry!! Huge good luck to you and your agent with those sales! A clean desk once a week – ooh, I love that. Mine is usually only clean at the end of each deadline . . .

Hi Kara! I agree with you about reconnecting with the kids. Working at home, it becomes so easy to never stop working, always have the computer on, etc. I gave my kids coupons for Special Time with Mom at Christmas and promised my son an entire hour that he could kick my butt at video games (urk). But he loves it!

OK, maybe I should start a new post for more . . .

Alyssa Day said...

Hi Leslie!! Thank you!!! I’ve been so worried people will have forgotten about my wonderful Atlantean warriors!! I’ll post new excerpts soon – please sign up for my newsletter at my new “work in progress” website. Oh, so with retired navy you totally understand. I am trying not to think about it because I am worried this deployment will be much harder than the first two since the kids are old enough to really REALLY miss Daddy.

Hi Eva! I hope you get more time to yourself. I spent all morning at the dentist with the kids (doing revisions in the waiting room, Go Me! LOL) and then tutoring at school, so this evening I’m going to the gym to do yoga all by myself. Staying true to that goal; the benefit is that it makes me feel really good and happier around everyone else.

Hi darling Cindy Holby! You are my inspiration, girl. You look so terrific!! I’ve lost 6.5 pounds since Christmas, so I’m going to match that 25 of yours!

Hi Carolsnotebook! Thanks! And huge good luck with quitting smoking. My mom and dad each had bouts with malignant cancer, so I know how important it is to quit. I’ll be sending you good wishes!

Hi Nicole!! Thank you so much!! Congratulations on your short stories!! That’s wonderful! I have a problem with spider solitaire . . . and I actually had to make my husband take DOOM off the computer. There was something so cathartic about making myself invulnerable and blasting bad guys when a scene wasn’t working – but I’d look up and an hour would have gone by!! Eek!

Hi Laurie! I’m so sorry to hear your 2008 started badly, but I do hope that your 2009 continues on that upbeat swing. I’m trying to take one day at a time to make sure mine does, too, but sometimes it’s hard. Good outweighing the bad is a very good goal. Huge hugs to you.

Kate my darling! You’re one of my most favoritist authors, too! Can’t wait to read book one of the new series in my coveted ARC. Woohoo!!!

Hi Katayoun! Oh, Japan is so lovely. The kids and I traveled there to visit my husband on his last deployment, but they were too young (the kids, not my husband, although he IS younger than me, LOL) to really enjoy it. We are planning a trip back as a family some year soon. Good luck!

Hi Darbyscloset! Boxing lessons are fun!! I (long story) helped promote a boxer once and spent some time in the gym with him. Excellent, excellent exercise! I hope to get back to my fencing lessons that were interrupted when I found out I was pregnant and didn’t want to fence with a big belly. LOL.

Hi Treethyme! Interesting log-in names everybody has! I feel so boring . . . Thank you for the kind words. I hope you enjoy Wild Thing, too!

Hi Donnas! It’s funny but even though it takes so much work with all the cooking and the fresh stuff and the pots and pan cleaning, I’m really enjoying the healthy eating. I made whole wheat pasta with turkey sausage last night and grilled salmon with scallop and asparagus a few days ago, all with plenty of fresh veggies, and I just feel so much better and have had loads of energy for long walks and writing.

Hi FatCat! Good luck with the morning jump start! It really is a nice way to start the day.

Hi Deidre! The budget is a good idea for me, too. I especially need to plan out business expenses in advance.

Hi Cathy! Thank you!! OOH, clutter!!! I hate clutter! I want to be a professional organizer in my next life and help people get rid of it all – it takes up too much valuable space and emotional energy. Good luck!!

Hi Cate!! Good luck with your goals!! And thank you for the nice words.

Hi Estella! Good luck with your goals!! I’m trying to lose some weight , too, and gain some muscle.

Hi Tetewa! You sound like me. I’m a reading fanatic! Good luck with that goal!

I'm retired, laid back and happy with no big ambitions. I'm a bit (ok, more than a bit) overweight so I really need to lose some more weight this year. And because I am a compulsive buyer of books, I really need to start reading faster so I can get through more of my 800+ books on my TBR shelves.

Can't wait to read "Wild Thing"! One of my resolutions for 2009 is to stop procrastinating and figure out how to motivate myself to get through things on time! Whew... I have several goals and wishes for this year, lol. My weight is a major issue for me, and procrastination is also a problem, so those would be the two main ones. I really have to stop procrastinating about losing weight!

I also want to manage my time better and I guess to be a bit more sociable. My health is another issue I'd like to improve upon. Fibro, TMJ & Arthritis do not make for me having much energy to get around to doing things I want to do. So that's also a major one.

The year 2009 did not begin as I expected it to be. A family member of mine passed away several days ago. So, as for goals and aims: I aim to be strong for everyone in my family. My goals are also to do better in school this upcoming semester and to read more. Last year, I have been constantly distracted with buzz of city life that I could not focus on anything.

Anyways, Happy New Year.

Hi Karen H! 800+ books?? Holy cow! You must not move much. LOL. With my Navy Guy husband, we move every couple of years, so I have to keep those shelves pared down. You’re going to have a very very happy year of reading, I can tell!!

Hi Sheena! You sound like me. One chapter, then I have to bathe the dogs. Or just two more chapters and then I have to X. it doesn’t work very well for me, either!

Becke! I knew your photo looked familiar!! Nice to see you! I’ll look for those photos.

LJ, I sure hear you. I have a baby blanket somewhere I started knitting for my beautiful baby boy. He’s going to turn 12 in May. Sigh.

Ooh, Macbeaner!! Wish I were there to help you!! Love to delutter! Yes, it’s a sick addiction . . . Enjoy your family outings!

Hi Judi!! Thank you so much for the kind words about my books. I can’t wait for everyone to read ATLANTIS UNLEASHED, I think it may be the best book I’ve ever written. Even in copyedits, parts of it made me cry! Good luck with the procrastination goal – I need to add that to my goals, too.

Hi Raven! Painting classes sound fun. I have a protagonist who is a glass-blowing artist, so I’m going to take glass-blowing classes. Can’t wait!

Hi, Alyssa--

I think we might have been separated at birth--except that you're blonde.(grin)
Seriously, as a writer and a mother of two children, two guinea pigs and a demanding Havanese dog, I'm running on empty most of the time and I've made a 2009 goal to give myself a break.

I hear you on the 'sleep' thing and I've instituted a small, yet wonderful, change to my daily schedule: a 20 minute nap. It worked for Churchill and Ghandi, so I figured why not give it a try.

What can I say? It's the best discovery since slice bread. I'm clearer-headed, restored, less cranky, and less likely to head to the fridge for something to keep my mind off of how tired I am.

I am trying to get to bed earlier (also having a dreading 6:15 alarm in the morning) but not having a lot of success. The nap seems to help me cope, and I really recommend it. And it's always the days when I tell myself that I don't have the time that I made myself do it.

Happy New Year to you, Alyssa, for a healthy, happy, and SAFE 2009 for you and your husband.

Alyssa Day said...

Hi Karen!! I love the nap idea but it's hard for me to sleep such a short time. I can't get my mind to shut off or if it does, I'm out cold. 20 minutes, hmm? should try it!

Hi Alyssa! I love your Atlantis series and can't wait for the next one. My hopes/resolutions for the new year are: that my family stays healthy, I do better with my bad habits, and that I finish what I start or plan to start more often.

One of my New Years goals is to not worry so much over every thing. I waste so much time and energy worrying over things I have no control over. So, I am going to work on not doing this all the time.

A Left Coast Cherry emailed the 10 words for 2009. Mine were : must let firends know how much they mean to me."
So, I'm telling you :)
TIA for the quick release of the next 3 Warrior books !

Well, my new year's goal is to exercise. It seems that lately the only thing that gets any exercise is my fingers from constantly typing. I got me an ipod, I'm going to exercise!

Hi Alyssa! Thanks for visiting us! I've read the first Atlantis book so far and would love a chance to read Wild Thing! Wow this is a lot of posters!

I'm transitioning to a new job this year in my company, and my husband's job is a bit rocky for him at the moment, so I guess my hopes and dreams for 2009 will be for the work situation to smooth out, and for us to have less stress in our lives! I really prefer for all my drama to be fictional, thank you very much! ;)

Congrats on the Wild Thing release! :)
