TV Plots We Love by Anne Mallory

I'm not a huge tv watcher, but I'm a faithful one when I find a show I love. I have been sucked into a new tv show that debuted in December on TNT - Leverage. If you watch TNT you can't miss the previews, but if you don't, the show is about a group of thieves and "bad guys" that unite under good guy Timothy Hutton to outscam the scam artists of the world and to help the little man. A kind of group Equalizer plot (loved that show too). Leverage has the classic elements I love - a group of skilled people working together with humor and cleverness. Little wonder that I started watching it when I have always loved shows like The A-Team and Mission Impossible. Tailor made for me, really. :) Movies like Ocean's Eleven and The Italian Job also rate in this category.

Other great team shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly didn't so much have the heist aspect present, but with their buddy/monster/badguy of the week setup they showed off their great dialogue and fun interactions. Supernatural falls into this category and I really love that show. I suppose it too is a show about skilled people working together with humor and cleverness. :) Love those Winchesters!

I'm hoping that the new Joss Whedon show Dollhouse also has these elements. :)

What is your favorite type of tv setup? Is there a show on now that exemplifies it? Or did you have a favorite setup in the past that you wish would be revived? Terra will select a winner from the commenters to receive one of my books - winner's choice. :)

Thanks, Terra, for having me at Yankee Romance Reviews!

Back cover blurb of The Bride Price:

Winner take all...

Sebastien Deville, the debauched, dangerously handsome illegitimate son of the Duke of Grandien, has waited his whole life for revenge - and suddenly it is there for the taking. A competition sponsored by the King has all the ton talking. The winner will receive an immense fortune, a newly created title, sponsorship, and a well-born bride - everything Sebastien needs to reclaim his mother's stolen lands and to wield the colossal power itching beneath his fingertips. His victory is all but assured...until he meets Caroline.

Caroline Martin knows all about Sebastien, the legendary heartbreaker who leaves women weeping in his wake, and she is determined not to see him win the competition in which he would claim her friend as his bride. Yet sabotage is so very hard to concentrate on when the target's searing glances promise incredible pleasure and his skillful hands vow unimaginable desire. She knows the danger he presents...the temptation he offers, yet she is willing to risk everything for all she holds dear.

But Sebastien Deville will do anything to win...and Caroline's heart may become the ultimate prize.

Hi Anne,
One of my current favorite shows is "Life." I love the premise. It's about a police officer who spent twelve years in jail for a murder he didn't commit. He's released after DNA exonerates him. He's back on the force and he's trying to find out who set him up for the murders and why. I love revenge and conspiracy themes.

I don't watch a lot of tv and never have. What I have watched with any regularity seems to fall into one of two categories. Either crime shows....good vs. bad and good wins or drama mixed with angst, humor and sarcasm, i.e. Grey's Anatomy (my current favorite), Friends, Melrose Place, etc.

Jane, Life is a favorite of mine, too. I like Charlie's quirky character with his Zen sayings.

The Closer's Brenda Lee is another great character, so smart and hones right in, yet has her own quirky compulsions.

I also liked Christian Bale in My Own Worst Enemy, sadly axed, where he played dual roles as his split personalities.

I've posted this on Win A Book. No need to enter the contest.

I've watched Leverage a few times and liked it a lot. I like Timothy Hutton, especially this character.

My problem is I've got way too many TV shows. One of my current favorites is Burn Notice. Life is a big favorite of mine too. And if you want a fabulous cast and great chemistry among the characters, check out Life on Mars.

I got hooked on La Femme Nikita years ago. Another group of 'good?' people working together to foil the bad guys. I got interested in Buffy once Spike came on the scene.

And then of course there's Lost -- sigh -- the show we love to hate and hate to love.

Did I mention I've got way too many TV shows?

Hi Anne. I like the shows where they solve crimes or there is a paranormal element.
Your book sounds great. :)

I love Thursdays, me and a group of friends get together and all watch Supernatural together. I'm also enjoying Bones and glad that Lost is back even though it is more confusing than ever!

My favorite new show is Lie To Me on Fox. Learn all about human nature and facial/body language to tell if a person is not telling the truth.

I like Bones too and Fringe.

I'm a tv junkie. I have fallen in love with so many new shows I hope they get to stay on the air. I'm into Leverage, the Closer, Fringe, Supernatural, Bones, any CSI, Stargate and Sanctuary. I miss Moonlight and the Dresden Files.

I haven't seen Leverage yet, but I'll watch anything Joss Whedon has a hand in!

I hadn't thought about shows in terms of skilled people working together, but that fits other shows I love - Bones, Monk, Psyche, even Ghost Hunters. :)

Anne, thanks for a fun, fresh take on TV and why we like the shows we like!

I don't watch a whole lot of TV, but I do enjoy Dancing with the Stars, American Idol, and Grey's Anatomy.

When I was growing up, we watched a lot of variety shows, like The Smothers Brothers, Sonny and Cher, and Mac Davis. I wonder if a show like that would do well in this day and time.

I like television shows set in hospitals. Grey's Anatomy, ER, Private Practice, and Scrubs are all shows that I enjoy watching. I also have a weakness for sitcoms. I watch The Office and How I Met Your Mother every week.

I like FBI profile type shows. I loved Profiler when it first came on. Now I follow Criminal Minds and just started watching Lie to Me.

I also like shows that showcase science. 11th Hour fits. The Mentalist and Lie to Me fit here too.

Other cop shows, I have to admit I follow all 3 CSI's and NCIS. I love NCIS. Mark Harmon still looks good.

I've watched Leverage as more a guilty pleasure thing. The plots have been kinda weak but I love the character interactions.

And the Winchesters are my heros.

My favorite TV set up focuses on the lives and relationships of people. How people survive in the world, overcome challenges, and forage bonds is my interest. Mixed with some action and maybe some history or horror, I'm hooked. That's why I loved shows like Rome and Queer As Folk.

I like that bit of paranormal plot mixed in or edge-of-your-seat suspense. Big fan of Charmed, Buffy, etc. I'm also a big fan of hospital drama - House, Grey's Anatomy, ER. Just something about that little bit of "other" grabs my interest.

I like a variety of shows. House, Ghost Hunters, Scrubs, True Blood and reality tv. Really if its written well and has a good story line I will watch it.

Anne Mallory said...

Lisa, yes chemistry and humor are so important, even in serious shows for me. :)

Hi, Jane and Pam! I've never seen Life! Will have to check that out!

Jill, I'm a big one for sarcasm too. :)

Mallory, I LOVED La Femme Nikita. That was the first show that hooked me into tuning in every week to watch a tv program!

Hi, Crystal! Thanks!!

Tetewa, another Supernatural fan, yay!

Anne Mallory said...

Kara, Lie to Me looks interesting!

Nice list, Ann Marie!

Thanks, Nancy! And I'm a Whedonite too. :)

Cheri, great point about the variety shows. I wonder if the late night shows and shows like Ellen and Saturday Night Live satisfy that for some viewers? Or America's Got Talent and Star Search maybe? I used to really love to watch Carol Burnett when I was young. :)

Hi Everyone and Welcome Anne!! Sorry I'm posting so late but I've been a bit under the weather today so have been resting.

As for TV, I don't usually watch it. If there is a historical program on I will sit down and check it out. The only thing I consider watching is Lost and NCIS. Other than that I would just prefer to read or listen to music.

It's nice to see the array of programs that interest all of you and I too would like to see a few more of the oldies but goodies come back into play. Something about that snarking comedy to keep the world of reality at bay.
huggs,
Terra

Hi, Raven! Do you like to watch House too?

Beth, the Winchesters are my heroes too. :) I have hopes for Leverage to work out some of its early kinks. :)

Great description, Valorie!

Anne Mallory said...

I like that little bit of other too, Wendy. Have you tried Supernatural?

Donnas, I have never seen Ghost Hunter, but I may have to check that out after the recs from you and Nancy. :)

The Bride Price sounds great!
I don't watch much tv, so haven't seen any of the shows you mentioned, or any others.

A bit embarrassed to admit it, but the only shows I watch are The Bachelor, American Idol and Survivor. lol I heard someone else recently talking about Leverage. I'm going to try and catch that one.

I used to really enjoy Law and Order and now I like The Closer. I like shows that I don't have to watch every week because I don't always have time at night to watch television.

Mona said...

I got hooked on lots of TV shows I don't think I'd remember much of them now, but they were a lot.
I remember Lost, Angel , Scrubs, Friends and of course CSI and years ago Buffy and ER.

Kytaira said...

I'm with Beth Caudill. I love the crime shows that either have profiling or forensics. All of the CSIs, Criminal Minds, and Bones.

I also like the humorous crime solving shows like Munk and Pych.

I also like Dexter.

In the past I liked Profiler.

Ironically, I don't read any books that match the shows I watch. Nor do I watch anything similar to what I read.

I like Leverage. I love the interaction of the group. For the same reason one show I never miss unless it is a rerun and then only rarely is NCIS.

Not a TV show, but a movie series I liked were the Rocky movies. The evolution of Talia Shire from a mouse to a glamorous woman was the main draw for me.

Thanks, Estella! :)

Kammie, I've watched every season of Survivor since the end of Season 1. ;)

Maureen, that is one of the great things about Law and Order. All of the episodes are pretty stand alone. Sure, there are some threads that run through, but you don't have to tune in every week. Makes it a nice thing to turn on when I just want to watch tv for an hour. I'm going to have to check out The Closer too!

Anne Mallory said...

Cool, Mona!

Kytaira, I think that is pretty common - to want different things in different entertainment flavors. :) I keep wanting to check out Dexter!

Very cool, Ray, about watching Talia Shire's character's evolution!

My favorite TV Shows this year are Bones, Saving Grace, Cold Case, Chuck, Fringe, Pushing Daisies, and Life On Mars. I also like The Amazing Race. I hate that ABC always cancels my favorites shows like Men in Trees and Moonlight. Classic favorites are Wild Wild West and Maverick along with Buffy and Angel

These days the only show I truly have to watch is 24. (OK, I admit I'm still hooked on Desperate Housewives.)

I love Leverage too! I finally got my husband hooked after bugging him enough. I like when a show can mix humor in. That's my favorite part. The Closer, Burn Notice, NCIS, ER are a few of the (too many) shows I enjoy watching on these long winter nights. Of course I have to read during the commercials!
