Would You Sleep With A Vampire? by Helen Scott Taylor

Writing paranormal romance obviously means writing about extraordinary or magical beings. Often the hero, heroine, or both are not human, or only partly human. And in a romance, one will usually have love scenes. So when does weird become too weird?

I suppose like many things it’s a matter of opinion. What woman wouldn’t be attracted to the tall dark handsome man who is also a vampire with his preternatural beauty, immortality, and superior strength? And the earthy attraction of a man who has the animal instincts and predatory nature of a wolf or panther tightly restrained beneath his veneer of humanity provides an intriguing and dangerous hero.

But what about a hero who has wings?

In my debut paranormal romance, The Magic Knot (Dorchester Jan 27) the hero and heroine both look human, although both are of fairy blood with magical powers. Writing love scenes between the heroine Rose who is half human and half Cornish pisky and the hero Niall who is Irish Tuatha dé Danaan was just like writing any normal love scene, except the first time they make love they are ‘running the light’ to release Rose’s hidden fairy qualities. But one of the secondary characters in The Magic Knot is a winged vampiric fairy called Nightshade.

The third book I plan to write in the series will be about Nightshade, and I’m already pondering the logistics of sex with a winged man. (It’s a tough job being a writer!) The thought of writing a love scene with a hero who is a testosterone charged vampire with a taste for power and blood, with the added spice of wings is an interesting prospect. I think his Scottish heroine is in for a great time!

Leave me a comment and tell me what type of magical or paranormal being is the most unusual or interesting hero or heroine you have read about for a chance to win a copy of The Magic Knot.

To read the first two chapters of The Magic Knot go to www.helenscotttaylor.com and click on the link on the front page.

Here’s a taster:

Rose Tremain sat on the chair before Niall’s desk, his Magic Knot cradled in her palm. She swayed slightly, her eyes dazed and dreamy. His nerves sparked. Need for her struck like lightning. He managed to suck in air, to ruthlessly crush the feeling until his body calmed.

So, he had been right. Rose Tremain was more dangerous than she appeared. She’d been sent to enslave him by capturing his stones. If she thought he’d give in easily, she had another think coming.

Silently, he walked forward and closed his hand over hers. His vision blurred at the whip of sensation. Too late, he realized his mistake in touching her. Gritting his teeth, he fought the mental pull as she sucked his very essence through their joined hands into a deep hidden part of her that whispered of ancient magic and mystery.

Niall snatched up his Magic Knot and stumbled back. His breath came in short gasps as he stared at her in shock. Rose was the Cornish pisky Tristan wanted. How had she stopped them from sensing the truth about her? That deception alone proved she was up to no good.

Slowly, her green eyes focused on him. Confusion set tiny creases between her delicate brows, then surprise chased them away. She slapped a hand over her mouth.

“Aye, be afraid, little thief,” he whispered. “You’ll pay dearly for your deception before I’m done with you.”

I think fairies are right up there with the most unusual. And your series sounds fascinating. I can tell already it's one that, once I start to read it, I'm going to wait breathlessly for the next installment.

When I first read the question I thought of a couple of answers, dragonshifter, Dream hunter, the hero's particles are spread around so he's sort of a spirit until his body can revaporize.

Then I read your interview. i have to say winged vampiric fairy is probably the most unique!

Wonderful blog, Helen - as ususal!

I read a lot of paranormals and urban fantasies, but think a vampire fairy might take the prize for most unusual hero! :)

I'm so excited about THE MAGIC KNOT, and I wish you every success with your debut and future books!

Estella,

Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my blog. A dragon shifter is certainly an unuasual type of shape shifter. I read a short story an anthology once with a dragon shifter hero. I can't remember who the author was now, but it was a wonderful story.

Kytaira,

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I haven't read of another vampiric winged fairy--yet. But I'm sure there is one out there in another author's book somewhere. I had a lot of fun writing about Nightshade as a secondary character and he continues to have a large secondary role in the second book. I'm looking forward to writing his story.

Vampiric fairy has to be up there as one of the most unusual.
I'm intrigued by the idea of in-flight sexual encounters. looking forward to reading more

What about short pale vampires with faces made for radio? I sense discrimination.

Shame on you.

Honestly, ANY supernatural being who is handsome, sexy, and powerful does it for me. As for wings (a heroine of mine in an upcoming series has wings...), I think that would make for powerful, interesting love scenes in unusual locations. Lol. =)

Can't wait to read your book!

The most unusual I have read is when the heroine shifted into a sea dragon.

bridget3420 said...

I would have to say that a necromancer is the most unusual.

Eva S said...

I like big cats and were-lions are rather unusual, but this vampire sounds even better!

carolsnotebook said...

Unusual- dragon shifters have to be up there, as does your vampiric fairy, and demons.

Thanks for entering me.

I think everyone has their own limits and boundaries with this kind of thing... My personal line is animal/human shapeshifters if there's any hint of sex in animal form.

That said... I really liked Marjorie M. Liu's Tiger Eye. Also Nalini Singh's Slave to Sensation. Those books proved to me that my "personal line" can move if the author handles it well. (and doesn't make me think the heroine is having sex with a cat, because for me, that's so not sexy.)

Good luck with your book, Helen. It sounds terrific.

Hi Everyone and Welcome Helen!! Gosh I have to say your book really does look delicious and quite unusual. I love the paranormal but when you add in the Irish or Scottish, hmm...........you certainly have my attention for a bit. I think it is just something about the ancient mystique that pulls me in and makes me want more.

The most unual character I've come across is in Cheryl Brooks book Warrior. You have a man with were blood but his penis is something you would never forget in your life. You gals just got to read that one. (Whew, it's getting hot in here) Actually it's not him that's so unual but his delightful package that leaves your mouth hanging open.

Well I hope all of you have a great day. I have some reports to write so will be online most of the rest of the day. Enjoy!!
huggs,
Terra

Thanks!!

Hi Suedo,

Thanks for stopping by to read my guest blog. I'm laughing here. I had vaguely thought of an in-flight sexual encounter, but the logistics might be difficult. Maybe just a kiss!

Hi Mario,

Short and pale with faces made for radio. Do you mean with antennae sticking out of their heads picking up the radio signals? Aren't they called aliens?

Helen Scott Taylor said...

Hi CJ,

Lovely to see you here. Thanks for stopping by. A heroine with wings sounds interesting...tell me more.

Hi Bridget,

Whenever I think of necromancer I always think of Anita Blake from Laurell K Hamilton's books. Raising creatures from the dead is an interesting concept.

Hi Eva,

Thanks for stopping by. I have to admit that big cats are to date my favorite shape shifters. Especially panthers. I am a cat lover anyway so cat shapeshifters are my idea.

Hi Carol,

Three people have mentioned dragon shifters. I'll have to look out for some books about dragon shifters. I'm sure I remember reading a review of one recently. Do you have any tips?

Helen Scott Taylor said...

Hi Maureen,

Thanks for stopping by to comment. I was thinking about Nalini Singh's Slave to Sensation when I mentioned cat shifters being my favorite. I think she handled them beautifully. I loved her hero in that book.

Helen Scott Taylor said...

Hi Terra,

Well Cheryl Brooks book sounds interesting. You have certainly piqued my curiosity. I'll have to check it out. I don't get a lot of time for reading these days unfortunately. When the choice is reading or writing I chose writing.

Hi DonnaS,

Thank you for stopping by to comment. Another vote for dragon shifters! They are doing well in the vote for most unusual.

I think the most interesting are the cat and wolf shifters. The animal and human sides must be so different that I imagine it must take some getting used to in order to meet the needs of both sides. I especially like how their human mates deal with their other side, like Nalini Singh's psy/changeling series.

Helen Scott Taylor said...

Hi Lisa,

I agree that shifters are always interesting when they have two such different sides to their nature. They have inherant internal conflict, which makes for wonderful characters.

MarthaE said...

Thanks for sharing today Helen! The Magic Knot sounds wonderful and great cover too! I haven't read about some of the paranormals mentioned although I like the sound of shifting dragons and sea dragons. I guess the most unsual paranormal heroine I have read lately is the demon battling Tweener, Astra- half angel and half demon. And there were some real paranormal monsters in that story!

Valorie said...

Perhaps not the most unusual, but the most interesting to me... vampires. Only, not just ANY vampire, but one. Marius from Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. I've been fascinated with him for over a decade and it is showing no signs of waning.

Hi Helen :)

Great blog!

I have read about a great many unusual heros, especially since I love paranormal romance. Shapeshifters are always interesting...

But, I have to say that my fave (and I REALLY have a thing for him) is Noah from the Nightwalkers series by Jacquelyn Frank. There is something oh so sexy about a Fire Demon that can make the whole room sizzle with a thought... he may come here and warm up my very cold Canadian nights any time he wishes!! :D

If he's busy, then I think I would be happy with your Nightshade... mmm, wings!

*grin* Thanks very much for blogging here today. It was a pleasure to read!

What a great post!

I enjoy reading about pixies and elves and the like. Vampires and werewolves are used a lot, but the fae is not explored as much in paranormal fiction.

Lisa said...

I think the most unusual is rat shifters. I don't like rats and to me that's just a little strange.

ScorpJen1121 said...

i guess fairies could be a really interesting one, or vampires. while not unusual persay they are intriguing.

I think Dragon shifters are right up there. that big ole dragon into a tiny man I say tiny because a dragon is usually large. Where does he put it all. I think Elves are really interesting with their beauty, man or woman and the powers that they have. I think Elves are from fairies. Thanks for the great interview. I really enjoyed reading it.

Hi Lisa,

Rat shifters are certainly unusual. One wonders how a big man can turn into a small rat. But I suppose it is only the same conundrum in reverse as a man turning into a dragon.

Funnily enough, my husband and I run a pest control company, so I have come face to face with rats on more than one occassion. I'd find it hard to ever cast them in a romantic light.

Thanks for leaving a comment.
