Highland Warrior by Monica McCarty

Hi everyone! I’m thrilled to be blogging with you all at Yankee Romance today. I want to say a special thank you to Terra for inviting me here to share a little about my latest release, HIGHLAND WARRIOR, which hit shelves last Tuesday.

First off Terra asked me to tell you a little bit about myself. I live in the San Francisco bay area with my husband and two children about five blocks from where I grew up. Although I’m a life long Californian, thanks to my husband’s former baseball career, I’ve had the opportunity to live in a number of cities around the country (two of my favorites: Boston and Minneapolis). I’m a relatively new author; my first books came out in the summer of 2007. I first fell in love with Scotland while at Stanford Law School while doing a paper on feudalism and the clan system (it probably didn’t hurt that this was also about the time Outlander came out). After a couple of years practicing law (litigation) and a couple of kids, I decided to sit down and finally do what I’d always dreamed of someday doing: write a novel. Four years later I sold that first book (by then I’d written three more books) and it was eventually published as HIGHLANDER UNTAMED.

But back to the current book…HIGHLAND WARRIOR is the first book in my new Campbell trilogy. Like my first trilogy (featuring clan MacLeod), it will be released in back-to back months. The second book, HIGHLAND OUTLAW, comes out at the end of this month and HIGHLAND SCOUNDREL follows at the end of March. So if you like strapping lads in plaid you won’t have long to wait to find out “what’s next?”

Also like my first trilogy, you’ll find plenty of “ripped from the headlines” history, bringing to life actual people and events with a sensual fictional twist. But don’t worry if you haven’t read the first series, each book stands on their own.

HIGHLAND WARRIOR is the story of Jamie Campbell the ruthless enforcer of Scotland’s most powerful clan who vows to use any means necessary to vanquish lawlessness and unrest amongst the Highland clans. Driven by a fierce sense of law and order, Jamie never questions the righteousness of his cause, until he meets Caitrina Lamont, the doted upon daughter of a rival chief who challenges him—and arouses him—like no other woman.

Readers of my first trilogy might remember Jamie from HIGHLANDER UNMASKED (book #2 of the MacLeods). His sister Elizabeth, also introduced in UNMASKED, gets her story in HIGHLAND OUTLAW. Their brother Duncan, who was born on the “wrong side of the sheets” as they say, rounds out the trilogy in HIGHLAND SCOUNDREL.

Although the Campbells usually take on the role of the bad guys in romance (and in history), I thought it would be fun to let these “bad boys” take on the role of hero and see where the adventure led. If you like sexy, Alpha heroes, I’m think you’ll be happy with the results—these guys definitely have an edge.

Taming the “bad boy” is on of the most popular (and enduring) themes in romance—whether Scottish warrior, Regency rake, Paranormal vampire or the Contemporary black sheep.

Do you have a favorite “bad boy” hero? I’ve got tons, but my all time favorite “dark’ bad boy is John Medina in ALL THE QUEEN’S MEN by Linda Howard. At the opposite spectrum, I love Kenny from LADY BE GOOD, by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Why do you think women love the bad boy (at least in their fiction, LOL)? For me, I think it’s the challenge: The idea that no matter how “bad,” with the right woman, any man can be transformed by love.

One commenter on today’s blog will receive a signed copy of my latest release, HIGHLAND WARRIOR.

Hi, Monica, isn't it great here at Yankee Romance Reviewers? This is seriously one of my favorite places. And speaking about favorite places, I'm glad Boston was one of yours, being a Massachusetts girl. So does that mean your husband played for the Red Sox? Who is he?

Oh, and I love books about the Scottish heroes, being a bit of Scottish myself.

Hi Monica, you write books about the place that I have always dreamed to visit. The highlands of Scotland, I would love to go there. I think that is why I love reading books about Scotland, it is my way to visit Scotland through books.

This is a great blog to visit to.

Hi Monica,
I definitely like a hero who has been bad but changes his ways. St Vincent from Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas has to be one of my favorites.

Thanks everyone for the fabulous welcome! It's great to be hear today.

Hi Margay, Yes, he played for Boston for a couple of years--including 2004! His name is Dave McCarty. He played mostly outfield and first base. Glad you to hear you like those Scots! Hope you'll check out the books.

Hi Virginia, I hope you get a chance sometime to travel to Scotland, it truly is one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited. I can't seem to get enough. :)

Hi Peggy,
I'm so glad you enjoyed the first trilogy, and hope you like the Campbells even better! I LOVE Lisa Kleypas and you're right, Sabastian is a fabulous bad boy.

Hi Kytaira,
I like those men in kilts, too, LOL. I haven't read Lori's books, I'll have to check that one out. JR Wards men are amazing, aren't they?

Penney,
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you've enjoyed them. Hope you'll get a chance to check out Warrior...

Hi Maureen,
That's two for St. Vincent! I love that book, it's definitely one I need to go back and re-read.

Hi Monica,

I love books about bad boys that have found their true love and changed. I think it's fun to watch them tumble.

I will check out the books! And wasn't 2004 one of the times they won the series? I think I recognize your husband's name.

Hi Monica! You already know how much I loved the MacLeod trilogy and it looks like the Campbells will be just as wonderful. I finished HIGHLAND WARRIOR in one day but I'll be going back for a re-read to savor Jamie a bit more and get ready for Lizzie's book next month.

St. Vincent is one of my favorite bad boys too. Another is Simon from SOME LIKE IT WICKED by Teresa Medeiros.

Hi Lisa,
I think that's why I love bad boys so much, too--watching the come up. :)

Hi Margay,
Yep, 2004 was "big" year for the Red Sox. The World Series was an AMAZING experience--I'll never forget it.

Hi PJ,
I"m so glad you liked Warrior--and only a few more weeks for Lizzie! I recently read TM's SLIW and LOVED it--I agree, Simon was fabulous. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

I am excited about your new series. I love highlander romances, and your book Highlander Untamed is my very favorite!

Hi Monica,
Congrats on the new release. Shannon McKenna has written some of my favorite bad boy heroes. I think my all time favorite is Seth from "Behind Closed Doors." He was the ultimate alpha hero.

I love books about the guys in kilts!

I thought so, but sometimes dates trip me up!

Hhmm, that would make a good basis for a book, huh? Behind the scenes at a World Series?

Hi and welcome, Monica! On behalf of Terry I wanted to say thanks for the lovely interview and blogging today here on Yankee Romance Reviewers.

Terry isn't able to be here because she got into a wee accident out on the slippery stairs last night. I know that she would say that Scottish men are hot hot hot!!! and that she loves a good Scottish hero! :D They are probably her favorite.

I like all bad boys... it's a bad thing! Haha!

cheers to you!

Monica McCarty said...

Hi Cheri,
That is so nice of you! What a huge compliment. I hope you'll enjoy Warrior just as much as Untamed!

Hi Jane,
Thanks! Shannon is one of my auto-buys--I totally agree with you. She does AWESOME bad boys. The hero from Extreme Danger is one of my all time favorite heroes in romances of all time.

Hi Estella,
I love those strapping lads in plaid, too. :)

Margay,
Someday I would love to do a non-fiction book about my 15 years as a baseball wife. Lots of ups and downs, but quite an experience.

I love sexy Alpha heroes, especially in historical romance. One of my favorites is Sebastian in Devil in Winter.

Monica McCarty said...

Hi Mona,
I hope you'll get a chance to check out Highland Warrior! I don't think Jamie will disappoint you in the sexy hero department, LOL.

Hi Kammie,
Sexy Alpha guys in historicals are right up my alley, too! Another vote for Sebastian! I think he's the winner. :)

Hi Pam,
I hope you enjoy Warrior! I LOVE Derek Craven, too. DOY might be my favorite LK novel--though it's hard to choose she is so good.

I'm off to bed, but thanks to everyone for the great welcome today! I had a great time blogging with you all.
