Hi everyone! And a big thanks to Terra and you all for having me here today. At the moment I am writing this it is actually almost two weeks before it will appear on the blog. I just finished the first draft of an erotic historical romance that will be out next year (under my Jess Michaels name, where I write erotic historical romance for Avon’s Red line). I just got back from Detroit, Arizona and New York City (in that order and with very little time in between).
In short, you are getting me at a moment where my brain hurts. So I went through all the emails I had initially exchanged with Terra to see if she had any thoughts about what I could write about because at the moment the topics I had in mind included “Sleeping is Fun” and “Why is Delta Airlines so Evil?” These are not things that would likely interest anyone else. One of the things she had mentioned was the idea of the rituals each writer has (and more specifically, the rituals I incorporate into my writing process).
I admit, the first thing I did was dismiss that idea out of hand. You see, I’m not really a “ritual” sort of girl. But as I stood in the shower, still wracking my brain for what to write, it started to hit me. My Anti-Ritual IS my ritual. And I also started really thinking about all the rituals I DO employ either in writing or in the publishing of my books.
Some writers have to write in the morning, others need to have music on, some need the door open… or shut. Or they have to write in Starbucks every morning from 9-11 while they drink half-caf, vanilla lattes with exactly two shots of… whatever. These writers are not me. I’m not knocking their rituals, by any means, I just don’t write like that.
I don’t listen to music while I write (in fact, I can’t… which I suppose makes the act of not listening to music a part of my “ritual”). I have two cats who get mightily pissy when the door to my office is closed, so it remains open mostly so I don’t have to get up and down to deal with them. I do like to drink Vanilla Coke Zero while writing, but I also drink it while watching tv, eating dinner and pondering my navel, so that may be more in the “addiction” category than the “ritual” one.
So I poo-pooed the whole notion of my own personal rituals… until I started thinking about the way I actually WRITE a book. Not where or when or what I have to wear, but how. You see, I almost always start with character sheets. If I don’t know my characters, how can I plot? Then I do a synopsis. Then I get completely ritualistic by writing elaborate “scene sketches” that are essentially a short-hand version of the book by the time I’m done. That’s when I start writing. If I run out of scene sketches, I can’t continue until I write more. So I guess that makes it a real-life, bona fide… RITUAL!
Startled by this revelation that I did, indeed, have writing rituals that I hadn’t acknowledged to myself until now, I started thinking about the day this blog would be publishing. While you’re reading this, my book, Her Notorious Viscount, will likely be trickling onto shelves all over the country and abroad. Its official release date is tomorrow, March 31. And I most definitely have some “release day” rituals.

First, there’s the nail biting. There’s the constant checking of Amazon rankings. And of course, the traveling out to all the area bookstores to sign stock and see my book, my real book, on the shelf for the first time. Because until I see it, I still feel like this is all some delightful dream. Even though I’ve had the dream 12 times now (ten with books from Avon).
So what about you? Do you have any rituals as a reader or writer? Do you have any anti-rituals? I’ll choose a winner from the people who comment today to win a signed copy of my last release, Lessons From A Courtesan.
Oh, and if your ritual this week could include running to your local bookstore and picking up a copy of Her Notorious Viscount… well, that would be a ritual I could really get behind!

Excerpt
The corner of Stoneworth’s lips lifted, but it made more of a snarl than a smile. “And who are you?”
Jane lifted her gaze to his, startled. “Oh, yes. I apologize. My name is Jane Fenton.”
“No, not your name. Who are you?” He tilted his head. “I don’t think we’ve met before. Although you do look… familiar somehow.”
She nodded, thinking of the brief way he had looked at her earlier in the evening. Trying not to think of the shameful thrill his meaningless perusal had given her. Now he didn’t even recall her face.
“Y-You might have seen me tonight at the Glouchester ball,” she explained.
“In that gown?” he asked, tilting his head to the side as if he were examining her serviceable, woolen frock.
More heat flooded Jane’s cheeks, but this time it was angry, as well as embarrassed. “Your cravat was crooked and you haven’t shaved for two days, at least. You have no room to judge-”
She caught herself, swallowing back the rest of her heated response to his jab. When she was pressed, Jane often had the terrible habit of letting honesty get in the way of tact. Her father had sometimes joked that she got her temper the moment she inherited the ruddy highlights in her otherwise plain brown hair. Now that “red-headed temper” might have cost her dearly.
She held her breath as she awaited Nicholas Stoneworth’s reaction.
But when he moved even closer, she found he was smiling at her. Something a bit more genuine than the feral snarls and false smirks she had seen him exhibit tonight.
“It seems I have hit upon a sore spot for you,” he said with an exaggerated bow. “I do apologize.”

My ritual while reading and writing is to go someplace very quiet. I get very easily distracted, and it irritates me, because my family seems to want to bother me more when I'm reading or writing. I also make sure I have something to drink, because I usually won't move until I feel satisfied that I wrote enough or that I got far in a book. And I also like comfort, so I find a comfy spot.

Jenna Petersen, woot woot! :) Happy to see you! I'm such a fan, just wanted to say, one of my favorite books is "Desire Never Dies"
My ritual is fairly boring. I take a shower so I'm all warm and in my PJ's and read in bed. I honestly have a hard time reading sitting in a chair, or outside or really any different environment. Maybe I'm weird but I can't hardly do it.
I don't think I have any true rituals when I read. I do like to be able to finish my book once I have started it. Of course, that does not always happen, because life happens :) If it is a long book, I take it everywhere I go during that day. This is why I need to purchase an ereader. It is hard to sit at the computer all day and finish my reading.

My ritual is to get everything finished that I have to get done at night. I always read in the living room on our couch. If hubby has TV on I put ear plugs in my ears to drown out the TV. He watches it pretty loud. I need it to be simi quite.
Your books sound like great reads.

My reading ritual is simply anyplace/anytime!

I am a romance author too. I'm like you. I didn't think I had any rituals for writing. Maybe I do though I would have to give it some serious thought to unravel what they might be.
I know some authors say they listen to music while they write but I can't do that either. It distracts me. I like for it to be quiet and peaceful so I can THINK and concentrate.
I highly dislike to be interrupted while I am deep into a work-in-progress so I usually shut my door to my office when I am writing. I sometimes go so far as to put a sign on the door saying DO NOT DISTURB - AUTHOR AT WORK.
Great topic for discussion, Jenna! And congrats on your latest release.

Love your books, love the new excerpt!
My writing ritual is to take a hot bath, usually with some nice bath salts (lavender is best) and put on a nightgown (or a nightrail, if I am going historical!) I light a scented candle, check my facebook really quickly, then settle down for my daily word quota. If an ice-cold glass of pinot grigio stumbles into this ritual somewhere along the way, I won't complain about that!
Jenna, wonderful blog!
I don't have absolute rituals as a writer. I can't listen to music unless it's nature sounds or New Age. Something without words or a dancin' beat. :) If hubby is home, I shut the folding screen to my office (no door), turn on the CD (if he has the TV on), and then pop on noise-reducing earphones. I don't consider these rituals, but rather self-defense.
As a reader, I'm like Mel. Anytime, anyplace, tho a certain amount of quiet is nice. Or an environment where noise blends into the background.
Congratulations on your success, Jenna, and may it continue many years!
Light,

I actually don't have a ritual either! How odd to realize that. lol.
Jenna, i met you at a conference and you were the nicest author there! So kind! Love your books!
I read everywhere all the time but...I have a bunch of anti-rituals. I can't eat and read because I'm a klutz and hate getting a book messy. I also refuse to read the book blurbs, preface, or reviews before I read a book so I can read it with an open mind.
Congratulations on the release of Her Notorious Viscount. I'll be picking it up at the bookstore on Tuesday.
My rituals are very easy, I get my list out of my favorite authors and I look at the bookshelves to pick up anything they have written that I do not have. Then I look again at all the books to see if an author or title sounds interesting, read the back blurb and then pick it up if it sounds good. I buy a lot of books.
I read anywhere at any time. I have books started all over the house and in my car. I don't carry one book around, my books are everywhere.
As you can tell, I love to read.
Congrats on the release!
I don't have any true rituals either, although my favorite place is in bed I read anyplace, anytime.
eva.silkka at gmail.com
Well, so far my rituals have included every book but this one. This is a poor week for me otherwise I'd have this one as well!
Reading rituals - I rotate type of book. Unless it's the same author, I don't read paranormals or historicals back to back. I need to switch genres.

Congrats on the new release, Jenna. I can't wait to read "Her Notorious Viscount." I like to read with the tv or music on in the background. I don't like to read in total silence. I also like to have a snack and a drink nearby so I don't have to get up later and get it.

Just wanted to drop a line to say I posted this on Win A Book.
I enjoy reading the most when I have some quiet time where no one is around and I have done whatever projects or housework needed to be done.

Hi everyone! And happy Monday/day before release day. Oh wait, that second part isn't a National Holiday? It's just me... well, fine. It's so nice to be here! I'm going to try to catch up on all the awesome comments and then I'll be here all day so if you ever had any pressing questions for me/any old author feel free to ask them!
nightdweller20 -- I'm also very distracted, so I hear you on that. And my office has been a wreck since I moved to a different room, so my chiropractor keeps yelling at me about creating a more comfortable space. Yeah, it's on my list. LOL
RachieG -- You are so sweet!! I'm so glad you liked DESIRE NEVER DIES. You know, someone else whose favorite was DND read this one early for a review and she told me it was her new favorite, so I wonder if that will hold true with other DND-lovers. You'll have to let me know!
Judy -- I've heard some good things about e-readers. Recently I got a Nintendo DS (my husband bought me one) and it's the size of a reader and for the first time I "got" it. This could work. So now... maybe I want one. LOL
Okay, going to answer more comments in a minute (this message is getting LONG).
JennaP
Okay, back.
Virginia -- Thanks! I hope you enjoy the books if you pick them up!
Mel -- You sound like my kind of reader. We authors love the "anytime/anywhere" readers.
Krisie -- Thanks! See, you're like me. "I don't have any rituals"... wait, except for that one and that one and that one... Huh. Who knew?
donnalu -- Thanks so much! I'm so glad you've liked my books. That just makes my day! :)
Okay more in a minute...
JennaP
Continuing on...
Nancy -- Thanks so much! :)
Lori -- That is so nice! I'm so glad we got a chance to meet. :) I love going to conferences and meeting other writers and readers.
Bartzturkeymom -- Now THAT is a very interesting ritual. Hope I didn't spoil my chances of getting read with the little excerpt posted here. Do you read reviews or anything AFTER you've read the book just to see what people said?
orelukjp0 -- Oh, thanks so much! I hope you enjoy HNV!! And keep buying lots of books!!
Eva -- Thanks so much! :)
Kytaira -- Aw, thanks so much. Hope you find this book soon! Interesting about not reading the same genre back to back. I've heard that from other readers, too.
Jane -- So my heroine's name is Jane... I always wondered if that threw people off when the character name was the same as theirs.
Bridget -- Thanks for spreading the word!!
Maureen -- See, if I waited for housework, I'd never read or write again. LOL I swear, I have fairies who mess up the house when I'm not looking. Stupid fairies.
Okay I look to be caught up, but I'll be around all day!!
I can read anywhere, anytime. I like reading while I'm sitting on the train and bus on my way to work. My ritual is that I can't go to sleep before I have read at least one chapter.
I don't really have any rituals unless you count having to go get a new book the same week it releases from my autobuy authors lol.
My ritual in reading is all in my favorite spot of reading which is in bed and that could be at any hour of the day.
Hi again!
Marijkske -- That is the nice thing about riding the train or bus, lots of extra reading time that you definitely don't get (or at least, I hope you don't get) in a car.
Lisa -- Well, that's a wonderful "ritual". It defintely makes a difference if readers grab the book in its first couple of weeks, especially for authors who are on bestseller lists.
Mona -- Right now it's a bit chilly here and curling up in bed with a book sounds nice. LOL
I enjoy finding out about a writer's rituals. So thanks for the post.
As a reader I sort through my TBR file. Look at the covers. See if anything calls to me at the moment, or sometimes I'll close my eyes and pick unless, that is, I have already decided before hand what will be next. Then I plop in the nearest chair and begin..
Not sure that's much of a ritual, but it's as close as I come to one.
My main ritual when reading is to find a quiet, comfy place -- which usually means the couch. That along with something to drink and some chocolate to nibble on and I'm quite content :-)
vmlay@artsci.wustl.edu
my reading rituals. I must have a drink on my bedside table, no socks on and a pillow in my lap that the laptop can rest on. I must have total quiet and I won't get up from a book until I am finished reading itl It's gonna be crazy here in a little while because I just got a 900 page trilogy! lol, I do take bathroom breaks, and I said that because I know that was bothering you right? lol
lastnerve2000@gmail.com
Patricia -- I like that ritual. The ritual of randomness... LOL
Marie -- See, now you're making me want chocolate. LOL
Wow, lastnerve, that is impressive!!
I am a reader at heart and I usually love reading in bed with the lamp shade on, with 2-3 pillows piled up, a couple more pillows on the side, a blanket and/or comforter (so I feel as if I'm a cocoon). I have something to drink by my bedside (usually water) 2 pieces of Lindt Truffles (milk chocolate AND dark chocolate). I really don't need absolute silence but all other lights, save for the lamp shade must be off.
If the book is so entertaining, I can walk while reading the book without bumping into anybody or tripping! I did this while I was still in school, not so much now.
I am not a published writer, but I dabble in a bit of poetry and when I do pick up paper and pen, I make sure that I light a single candle and curl up in a dark corner. Something must be playing really low (music that I'm inspired with at the moment) and I have to write at night. I can't seem to concentrate when people are walking by me every so often.
---
BTW I hopped by from facebook! :)
Can't wait to read your book Jenna!
zerisse[at]gmail[dot]com
I don't have any rituals when I read. I just grab a book and sit down and read.
Jenna
I have the book on order and will probably get it next week sometime and I am so looking forward to reading it.
As for rituals in my reading I try so hard to read them as they are released but find my TBR pile is so large at the moment it can sometimes be a close my eyes and pick up a book to read but I know when my parcel of books arrive from Rendezvous yours will be the first I read.
Have Fun
Helen
I don't think I have any rituals. Silence would be nice, but I won't have that in the house for a few more years. When I start writing a story it is because I have a character in my head and a setting and I go from there. I guess my one ritual while writing are my notecards for each character. As they develope, I add notes. I have no rituals for reading. There is a book with me or in my purse at all times and I will read the moment an opportunity presents itself.
amydetrempe@yahoo.com
My ritual as a reader is to read at the same spot. If not, I can never finish a book on time and then I'd be behind. Count me in for the contest.
zerisse -- Thanks so much! I hope you like it. :) And I used to be able to read while walking too. I tried it on the treadmill lately and almost killed myself. LOL
Estella -- That works for me! :)
Helen -- You are always so sweet! I so hope you enjoy HER NOTORIOUS VISCOUNT!!
amy -- Yes, I want silence, but honestly it's hard to come by in the best of circumstances.
Book Gossip -- so where do you always read? You've piqued my curiosity.
I'm a reader, not a writer, but I do have my rituals. Every month, when RT Booklovers magazine comes out, I read all the reviews for the authors I know and all the reviews in my favorite categories. Then I circle them, then enter them into a shopping list on my computer, then go to Amazon and put them on my Wish List. Once or twice a month, I go on a buying orgy and order all the ones I absolutely must have the day they are released. Can't wait for the UPS guy to come tomorrow with the latest batch of goodies!
I actually go to your Passionate Pen website and check out the new books that are coming out during the month. Then I hit the local Barnes & Noble and spend too much money. If one of the books is part of a series I'm reading it goes to the top of the TBR pile. Otherwise, it is eenie meenie miney moe to pick the one to start on. My only ritual in the reading part is to try to not start too late at night because once I start it is hard to stop and working the next day is awful when you read until 3 a.m.
I'm a big fan of your Jess Michael's books and can't wait for Taboo next month. But lately I've been playing catch up with your Jenna Petersen titles and Her Notorious Viscount sounds sooo good.
I like to read at night after hubby and son have gone to bed. I have a cozy spot set up in the corner of the d.r. next to the window with a comfy chair, lamp, decorative but useful pillow and blanket, and lamp stand for my hot tea. I like to sit there during the day on the weekends to read. I also like to sit there during the day to write. I have a comfy place on the couch, too, that I like to read at night after everyone's asleep. I cannot write with music; it's too distracting.
Happy Release Day for you tomorrow! Great premise for your story. I also loved the excerpt on your site.
Julie
Hi everyone!
This is probably my last comment for the night and I'll pick a winner from the comments in the morning, so keep them coming! :) Also, just wanted to mention that starting tomorrow I'll be the first author launching the Avon Books Reader Group at Facebook. Okay...
Kay Anne -- I love to hear about reader rituals!
Lila -- Oh, thanks so much! Yes, TABOO (Jess Michaels) comes out April 21, so this is a busy month for me! I hope you enjoy both stories!!
Julie -- Thanks so much! I'm happy to share my "release day insanity" with others.
Thanks again for having me! XOXO
I can't say that I really have any rituals as a reader. I read whenever I can. I have turned my husband and daughter both into readers.
Eep! The book is out today! :)
Yay, happy release day!
It's not really a ritual, but I almost always read before going to bed. And in the summer I love to read outside in the hammock.
My ritual is I count how many pages are in the chapter before I begin reading - my hubby thinks it's weird.
msboatgal at aol.com
No reading rituals for me - I can and do read any place, any time!
Jenna, I'm a heavy plotter, too. Character profiles, synopsis, scene sketches, and timelines are all on my ritualistic list. What I hate is when pesky new scenes try to boss their way into my carefully laid out synopsis, thereby calling for a whole new synopsis AND timeline. lol. Hmm...wonder if that's the sign of a control freak? lol.
Anyhoo, kudos on your newest book.
