Reunions by Tawny Weber

Are you a fan of reunion books? I am – which shows in my latest release, COMING ON STRONG. This is a ‘she left him at the altar’ story that I call my runaway bride with a reunion twist. When I was coming up with it, I asked myself why a woman would leave a man at the altar – keeping in mind that the man was the hero of the book so he had to be, you know, heroic.

The answer? An oldy but a goody – no sex without marriage. But... again, with a twist. She wanted sex, he was holding out for a ring on her finger. The result? A really fun book to write.

I really enjoy reading reunion stories myself. I think it adds a whole ‘nother layer of depth to the characters. Why didn’t they work the first time? What made them come together then, versus now? How do they feel about their history and how does it factor into their reaction to each other?

Here’s how my hero, Mitch, reacted to seeing Belle again:

One more step into his office and Mitch felt like he’d been hit in the face. Maybe it was sex on the brain, but even the air shifted, turning sultry and suggestive. He breathed in, his lungs filling with a musky floral scent.

Instant turn on.

Seated as she was in the high-backed leather chair facing the window, all Mitch could see were long, sexy legs ending in strappy black ‘do me’ heels. He tried to swallow, but his mouth had gone dirt dry. Those were wrap around the shoulders and ride-‘em-wild legs.

Damn. Talk about distraction.

Mitch flipped his phone closed, not sure if he’d said goodbye or even if his foreman was still talking. He stepped further into the office, deliberately closing the door behind him. Two steps into the room, and he could see around the high back leather of the chair.

Gorgeous. The impact was like getting kicked in the gut by a black belt on steroids. Swift, intense and indefensible. The first time he’d seen Belle, she’d been twenty-one. He’d thought then she couldn’t possibly be more confident in her own sexual power. He’d obviously been wrong, since she was now a master of it. Or was that mistress? And why did that make him crave studded black leather shorts?

Six years had added layers of polish, maturity and assurance to her already powerful sexual charisma. Mitch’s gaze reluctantly left those delicious legs to travel upward. He noted the flirty green skirt, the same shade as her eyes, ending a few inches above her knees. A wide leather belt accented her waist and emphasized her lush breasts in the gossamer soft white blouse. Mitch let his eyes rest there for just a second, millions of regrets pounding in his head. He’d wished like hell that once, just once, he’d tasted their bounty.

He was sure if he had, he’d have easily kept her out of his mind. The only reason he’d never finding another woman to replace her was that he’d blown the fantasy of sex between them all out of proportion.

He felt her amusement before he even looked at her face. Belle was used to being ogled, so he didn’t waste time on embarrassment. He wondered briefly at giving her that much power this ear
ly in the game, but he couldn’t seem to help himself. That there was a game afoot was implicit. The question wasn’t who would win, either. It was how much it would cost him to play.

She arched one platinum brow, amused challenge clear in her eyes and the dimple that played at the corner of her full lips. Her hair was shorter now, angled to emphasize her rounded cheekbones and the sharp line of her jaw.

“Well, well,” Mitch drawled, moving around to lean on his desk while he faced the biggest mistake of his life. “If it isn’t my long lost bride.”

How about you? Are reunions a theme you enjoy, or one you shy away from? What reunion stories have you read – do you have a favorite?

Tawny will give away one copy of any of her backlist books to one lucky commenter.

The thing I don't like about reunion stories is many times the characters haven't changed much, so I wonder why it didn't wok out the first time. I can't think of any reunion books that are my favorites. Of course, I haven't read Coming on Strong yet.

I go for just about any story, if it's well told, I'll follow right along. With reunion stories, I confess I have trouble with the ones that rely relationships that were first formed with the protagonists teenagers. They get all angsty about issues from when they were teenagers and I always end up thinking, hell, didn't you grow up at all in the intervening years?

Other than that specific scenario, I like reunion stories.

Tawny said...

Tammy - that's a good point. I'd really like to think that after six years or so have past, the characters would have grown up at least a little... right?!

LOL I'd say that Coming On Strong doesn't have that issue, but I'm biased and would love to get your opinion if you read it ;-)

Oh Carolyn, I hear you on those teenage hormones and angst. And yes, I firmly believe that should stay in the teenage past *g* If the characters were teenagers together, I'd want to see a lot of growth when the reunite.

I love reunion books. It's kind of fun to read a story about people who knew eachother previously because their is always a good backstory to get interested in.

I guess I would have to say my favorite backstory would be Julia Quinn's...I can't remember the name right now but it was one of the Bridgerton books Benedict's maybe?). One of Lora Leigh's Breeds series was a reunion book too and I loved it. Super hot and a fun read. :)

As long as they've changed from the time they last saw each other, I have no problem with reunion stories.

Hi Rachie - I think you're right, there's definitely a strong backstory when the characters are reuniting. And sometimes its just as fascinating to watch a couple get to know each other ALL OVER AGAIN as it is the first time, isn't it?!

Hey Nightdweller *g* I totally agree!

I am sure I have read a bunch, but my mind is rather blank now.
But like with others answers here I did get thinking, if it's a story where they are the same still, then why didn't it work the first time. They again people grow up, evolve, and they are fun to read

I enjoy reunion stories - usually. I rarely like them when there are children involved because one parent winds up missing so much. I also don't like them when there is a large span of time involved. The couple has just lost sooo much time together!

Some of my favorite reunion books are Harlequin Presents. Jacqueline Baird's Marriage at His Convenience and Shattered Trust. also Carole Mortimer's A Lost Love. A non-series book was Barbara Freethy's Just The Way You Are.

Hi Blodeuedd :-) It seems we're all in sync with our reunion tastes so far *g*

Kytaira those are some of my fave authors! And yes, kids in stories always tend to make my reading requirements a little tighter. I might forgive emotional choices if the characters were parentless when they split up, but if they have kids, I'm always wanting to know they worked every angle they could before they split... and if they worked every angle, well... what changed that they can make it work this round?

I love reunion stories. I read a great one by Suzanne McMinn (can't remember the title) and though it's not quite the kind of reunion you're talking about, I adored SEP's Ain't She Sweet? And Michelle Styles did a great Viking one that had a secret baby, too. Nice. I love the richness of characterisation and conflict that a shared backstory can provide. In all of those books, the years that have passed have developed the characters into people who can now adapt and love in ways they couldn't before.

I love your descriptions in your excerpt! "A black belt on steroids"—brilliant! And great twist on the "no sex before marriage" rule.

Hey there Kim :-) I love bad boy anythings, so I'd be on board for a reunion for sure!!

JULIE!!!!! Hi *g* and thank you ;-) I really enjoyed SEP's Aint She Sweet and think it was a great reunion story -altho like you say, not the standard break-up-reunite. You're description of what makes a reunion story is fabulous.

Tawny, Coming On Strong sounds like another winner! Congratulations!

I like reunion stories in general, though I can't remember the last one I read. As others have said, it's interesting to see into their past, into what didn't work the first time, to see why it's going to work out now.

Cheers to you!

Tawny said...

Hi Nancy ;-) Its so cool to see you here, I can't wait to pick up your new book! Thanks for the cheers and congrats!

MJ, I'm with you -a happy ending is requisite in my reading. I admit, I read to feel good and happy endings are a major part of that.

Tawny, just swinging by to say what a fabulous read COMING ON STRONG is! Can't wait for GOING DOWN HARD. By the way, hot titles, my friend!

Tawny said...

Anna!!! Hola chica, its so cool to see your hot hunky avatar LOL. Thank you tons - I can't wait to hear what you think about Going Down Hard. The amazing Kate Carlisle gets credit for the titles, since she suggested them during one of my meltdown title suggestion requests ;-)

Anna Campbell said...

Yes, our Kate is quite a naughty wench under her sweet exterior, isn't she? ;-) I think they're brilliant titles! And I'm sure I'll love Going Down Hard. Hmm, re-reading that sentence, I'm starting to feel like a saucy wench!

Tawny said...

Hmmm, methinks you are definitely the saucy one, Ms. Campbell!!!

I'm not a big reunion theme fan. In fact I can't recall a true reunion book I've read. It'd be interesting to read this one to see how I'd like the theme.

Tawny said...

LOL Scottsgal - I hope you do check it out and let me know what your opinion of the them (and the book) is!!

Jane said...

Hi Tawny,
congrats on the new release. I do enjoy reunion stories, but I'm also wary of them because there must have been a reason they broke up and are not together anymore. It's important that the couple resolve their issues for a reunion story to be enjoyable.

Hi Everyone and Welcome Tawny! What a wonderful post and that book looks lickable. YUMM! Guess another for my tbr pile when I can get to the store to buy it.

Sorry so late coming on but the hands are acting up since I started PT this week and they have been getting a workout. At least they are starting to move. After eight weeks in hard casts they are stiff as boards.

Hope you all had a great day and Thanks so much Tawny for being with us today. Please email the name of the winner after you choose.
huggs,
Terra

Tawny said...

Hi Jane :-) Yes! Like you, I think resolution of the past is vital for the characters to have a successful relationship!

Tawny said...

Terra - thank you so much for having me here to visit. It was a lot of fun!! I hope your hands are better soon ;-)

As for the winner - my handy dandy random number generator (or in this case, my CP *g*) picked Estella!

Estella, if you want to drop me an email to Tawny@TawnyWeber.com with your shipping info, I'll get the book right out to you.

Hi Tawney,

I Loved Coming On Strong. It was a very good story and I did love the reunion aspect. I would love to see a squeal with Reece and Sierra. I found them almost as entertaining as Mitch and Belle. And with Mitch and Reese' family. Wow. Would that be a hot story.

I find reunions to be very good reads as they answer the question What if... I know I for one think back and wonder how things would be if I got together with whoever. A good subject to read about.

Tawny said...

Hi orelukjp0 :-)

Thank you so much!! I love that you enjoyed Coming On Strong so much!! And yes - Sierra and Reece will be in Going Down Hard - out in Blaze next month! I hope you like it, too *g*
