When the sun goes down, the beast comes out…
That's one of the tag lines created for IMMORTAL OUTLAW by the brilliant copywriters at Berkley. I love it. For one thing, it establishes my hero's problem in a single sentence.
As one of the members of crew that raided Odinsbrigga in search of treasure, Steinarr suffers from the same curse as the other members of the Immortal Brotherhood: he's a were-beast, and he's going to live forever, enduring the pain of changing from man to beast and back again at every dawn and dusk until the end of time. For Steinarr, when the sun goes down, it's a lion who comes out...so dangerous to others that Steinarr keeps to the deep woods, where the beast can harm no one. It makes him a terribly, terribly isolated man.
For another thing, that tag line has nine words.
When I visited YRR last fall, I wrote about the premise for the Immortal Brotherhood and mentioned that there are nine warriors because nine is a number significant to the Norse Gods. But it's more than simply significant. The gods are obsessed with the number nine, and it turns up constantly in the old sagas and legends (Wikipedia has a partial list of nine references here, if you're curious).
I always intended that nine would play out all through the series. To start out with, I had those nine warriors, nine amulets, nine books to be written. But then without being told to, the copywriters came up with that nine-word tag line. And I—without intending to, I swear—created a nine-clue treasure hunt/quest for Steinarr and his lady-love, Marian. I didn't even realize there were nine clues until I started working on the interactive map of the quest for my website a few days ago. I put in the locations, numbering each clue as Steinarr and Marian found them, and as I neared the end, I was going, "No, it couldn't be, omigosh, there are NINE!"
I'm not superstitious, but clearly, there's something going on in the back of my brain. I'm fixing on nines in just the same way that you start noticing green VW Bugs after you buy one (or run into one). You may have never noticed a green VW in your life, but once it's flagged in your attention monitor, you see them everywhere.
Nines have now been flagged.
Just watch. You'll start noticing nines everywhere now. And when you do, you'll think of Steinarr and IMMORTAL OUTLAW. And why not? I mean, isn't that back gorgeous? Don't you want to think of him any chance you get?
I do.
Here's more of the copywriters' brilliance, the back cover copy:
For centuries he’s hidden in the woods. Now a maid has come to lead him out...

It’s been four centuries since Steinarr the Proud was cursed by a wicked sorceress—along with the rest of his Viking crew—to live for eternity as half man, half beast. By day Steinarr is like any other man—by night he is a lion. He has taken refuge in the woods of Nottingham, England, and there he encounters two young travelers, Robin and Marian.
Painfully aware of the danger he presents when the moon rises, Steinarr refuses to help guide them on their search for a special amulet. But a kiss from Marian awakens his desire. How can he protect the maid he so desperately wants to ravish? With motives of his own, Steinarr finally joins their quest, while the sorceress Cwen gathers her dark magic to destroy them.
As a legend spreads of an outlaw in the woods, their band is joined by others. But it is Steinarr who has the most to gain and the most to lose—if he is ever to be free of the curse and free to love as a man…
Yep, it's a Robin Hood story—but not your usual one. And that's all I'm going to say, because you can read the entire prologue and first chapter of IMMORTAL OUTLAW on my website.
And while you're there, poke around a little. You'll find printable bookmarks, a way to get a signed bookplate, that interactive map I mentioned, and other goodies.
Do you have a number that is special to you? What is it and why is it "your" number? Watch for nines today and let me know in Comments where they turn up and whether my little thought experiment worked (i.e., did you think of Steinarr?).
Leave your answer in Comments for a chance to win one of three autographed copies of Book 1, IMMORTAL WARRIOR.
Thanks for stopping by,
Lisa

Hi Lisa! Great post. I understand your fascination with nines. I'm a threes person myself, as in trouble comes in threes, as in the equilateral symmetry of the trinity, as in tall, dark and handsome. I love that your hero becomes a lion. Put me in the drawing to win a copy. maggietoussaint at darientel dot net
The book looks awesome.
I am a 2 and 7 kind of girl myself...but I don't know why, I just like them and they feel lucky to me.

Hi Lisa!
I'm reading Immortal Outlaw now! I loved Immortal Warrior and have been anticipating Steinarr's book since I read the first one.
What a strange coincidence with the number 9! That is very cool. I don't have a special number, but I'll let you know if the number 9 should stand out today!
No need to enter me in the drawing. But I will check out how to get some of your goodies :)!
8 has been my number since I was a teenager. At a fair a psychic/numerologist told me 8 would be prominent in my life. So far the only 8 is I got 8 neices and nephews,I guess the big thing hasn't happened yet. But I still hang onto that number 8.I use it in lottos,emails,screenames,etc...
Thanks for the chance to win the book, and I'll be looking out for the number 9 today.

Hi Lisa. Immortal Outlaw sounds wonderful. I love the cover. For me, my numbers are 9 and 16. Nine is the day I got married and 16 is my birthday.

I've always been a 25 girl. It brings me luck all the time. Please count me in in the drawing.
Your books look awesome! I went to go buy them both yesterday, but Immortal Warrior was out of stock :( I did buy Immortal Outlaw though :)
My number is 13 :P

Hi Lisa,
I just love the cover. It is fantastic.
My favorite number is 10. My oldest daughter's birthday and both my daughters favorite number also. I also love 16 and 19. Again, they are my childrens' birth dates.
Thank you for putting my name in the hat for your drawing.

Neat guest post! Just blogged on Win A Book about this.
The number 3 seems to follow me around a good deal. I can't say if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Recently I read a few non fiction books about Vikings and the number nine wasn't mentioned so thanks for adding that to my knowledge. Your book sounds interesting. Is it a mix of fantasy and romance?
my lucky number is 8 cause that is when I was born 8/8 and it's always been lucky for me.
I love your take on the whole Robin Hood mythos, it's really intriguing!
And my favorite number is 2. It's so even and my type-A personality loves evenness.

Great post! I can't wait to read Immortal Outlaw. :)
I have to say that the number 11 is my number. It's my birthdate, my life path number in numerology and it seems to come up a lot for me. 9's do as well.

Hi Lisa,
I happen to be fond of the number three, like many of the other commenters. Don't know why, I just am, but I will definitely have to look into your "nine" phenomenon.
I haven't read any of this series, yet, but am going to have to put them on my TBR list.

Hello Lisa,
Love the cover of "Immortal Danger". My numbers are 3 and 8. I chose these numbers because of two drivers in Nascar. I'm a huge fan of Dale Sr. and Dale Jr. Count me in for the contest. Have a great day.
Lisa, your book is now in my TBR pile - I hit B&N last night!
Nine is the number of completion, too, and I watch for it with interest. (Tho no sightings yet today.)
My numbers are 5, 7 and 13 - that includes numbers that "reduce" to these, such as 23, 32, or 41 (5). The numbers 12 and 21 (and the reduced to number 3) also seem show up in my life a lot. :)
I would like to be in the drawing, and I wish you all continued success, Lisa!
Light,
Nancy Haddock

Wow, busy place. Sorry I'm a little late stopping in, but I had to take my dd to the eye doctor this morning.
First, I want to say thank you to Terra for inviting me back.
It's great fun seeing all of your favorite and lucky numbers. I think you "three" people might be interested in the Viking valknut, or as it was called by them, hrungnishjarta [Hrungnir's Heart]. It's an ancient symbol of three interlocking triangles that had associations with the afterlife (and more recently, unfortunately, with neo-nazi groups. Ick.)
A couple of my links didn't come out, so I'll put them here:

Does anyone have any questions? Ask away, please.
I'll stop back again in a little while and answer what I can. (Right now I've got to get ready for the M-i-l's visit, a foster dog, my son's HS graduation, an end-of-school party for my daughter, and a bunch more blog tour stops. All this weekend! Busy, busy.)
Toodles.
This book sounds like my kind of read.
This book sounds good. Please add my name to the drawing.
Don't know much about numbers, but I guess my number would be 11 and that is only because my birthday is 11/11

Hi Lisa,
Congrats on the release of "Immortal Outlaw." I'm an eight person. I got that from my mom. I also like 11 because one of my favorite athletes wore that number.

Eleven is my number--I was born in the eleventh month.

This sounds like a great series! I've been hearing great things about it and would love to win a copy of book 1. My number is 19. I was born on the 19th at 19 after the hour in the 1900s. It tends to be the number I go for when I need a random number.

No nines but I understand the interest in numbers. Good things seem to have something to do with 4 and bad with 3 for me.

11 has always been my lucky number :)
Immortal Outlaw sounds great, love the cover!

13 is my lucky number!
I don't a special number other than the usual birthday date numbers. My luck has not been tied to a number. But I do have a fascination with numbers, which is why I watch the TV show NUMBERS.
Hi, Lisa!
My number has always been two. I seem to always want two of something: two kids, two Starbucks Mochas, two of the same shirt in different colors, etc. However, I did notice that there were NINE children at a party I took my daughter to this afternoon! I'm looking forward to reading Immortal Outlaw...it sounds terrific!

Yo, Diane in Olathe! I spent my summers in Ottawa, and my grand-aunt's house. Sweat and cicadas and old people out under the walnut tree, soaking their feet after supper to cool off. Those are my memories of summer.
Sue, I'm a NUMB3RS fan too, but I watch all the crime shows. My family gets all grossed out, but I love them.
I notice no one said four or five. Isn't that strange? In Japan, four is thought to be unlucky because it's pronounced the same as the word for death (although the kanji are totally different). Tea sets come with five cups.
They also think nine is unlucky, because it's pronounced the same as the word for torture or agony.
And they've adopted the unluckiness of 13 from the west. On JAL, there are no seats numbered 4, 9, or 13.
Eight, however, is lucky, as the shape of the kanji suggests better things to come
Hi Lisa! I can see what you mean by your nines. My lucky number is 7 but I kind of like 13 myself. I am not real sure why I like these numbers. I had a friend that said that the number 13 was lucky for him. Thanks for sharing your books with us.

Hi Lisa!
Great post! My number is eights, but I don't no why. Sometimes I think it's because it's never ending, infinity.
My Grams is 7, 11, 21 (her lucky numbers, I think it's something to do with cards) lol
Please enter me, Immortal Outlaw sounds great!

You will love this book! (Don't put me in for this one, I've had the joy of reading this one!) So looking forward to your new one Lisa!
Interesting about 3 and Vikings, Lisa, I do like Vikings and 3 comes up in numerology for me.
As far as 9, Wednesday I noticed our daily number was 9299.
Hi Lisa! I am a ten girl, and always have been. When I was younger, I was obsessed with turning ten, both because I loved the number and because I thought it meant I would be one of the "big kids" - which, considering that I turned ten just before entering fifth grade, the highest grade at the school I was attending, wasn't entirely wrong. Two years later, I realized that I was my grandparents' tenth grandchild and thought it was the best coincidence in the world. But now, thanks to you, I'm going to be reacting to nines for at least the next few days!
lynzajw(at)gmail(dot)com
Oops, when I commented earlier, I missed that Nancy said 5 was one of her numbers.
I also missed a question from Mickey about whether IMMORTAL OUTLAW is a mix of fantasy and romance -- the answer is a definite YES. I'm a romance writer and always will be, but I definitely drew some fantasy elements into this series with were-beasts and an evil sorceress and Vikings who live forever. However, the books are heavily grounded in real history, as well, and I do tons of research before and during the writing.
I'm winding down for the night. I'll pop back in tomorrow morning, if anyone else has any questions. 'Night everyone.
I'm big on the number 20 myself. It just seems like a nice round number, and has always been lucky to me. But then, any even number works for me. I'm a bit wary of odd numbers. I don't know why.
tiffanyak1986(at)hotmail(dot)com
My lucky # has always been four, no particular reason. Looking forward to your release!
My number is 22. It was my father's football number in high school & it is the day I was born, baptized & married!
Please count me in - Thanks!
Oh ya, I know what you mean. Once you're conscious of something, it pops up all over the place! :D
My number has always been 19 because of my birthday. I recently joined a softball team and went to pick my jersey number only to find out that the team captain/coach had already taken number 19 because of HIS birthday! Ha! I tried to argue that it was my number first since I'm a bit older but it didn't work. Heh heh. I had to settle for 42, the Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything. :D
Thought you might like to know how the winners were chose:
I went to random.org for a random number, which turned out to be 19. The books went to the three people who mentioned the number 19 in their posts (one of whom was pissenlit, who also happened to be post #38, or twice 19!)
omg...winners were chose?
Chosen. I'm not a redneck. Really. //g//
Why is it you never see those things until after hitting Post.
Hi Lisa,
I don't have specific numbers but 7 and 3 seem quite lucky for me at times.
gaby317
I'll keep an eye out for the 9s!
I just had to come in an post one final note: On Monday, I had a thyroid biopsy (goiters, it turned out -- doesn't that sound old-fashioned?). It was a fine needle aspiration, and guess what: The doctor poked me NINE times.
Geez.
