Masquerades By Christie Kelley

Does the idea of being someone you’re not intrigue you? I love a good masquerade party. Hiding behind a mask so people can’t determine your identity, or just becoming someone you’re not for a few hours. It’s exciting to be there wondering if people really know who you are, or not.

In my second book, Every Time We Kiss, masquerades play an important role but not just in the party aspect. Until I started to write this blog, I never realized the parallels that I had written into the story. The hero and heroine, Matthew and Jennette, first meet at a masquerade party for the heroine’s twenty-fifth birthday. They had known each other years ago but this is the first time she’s seen him in over five years. At first, she doesn’t recognize him behind the mask he’s wearing.

The second masquerade party is part of the black moment of the story. The couple are both starting to believe they could be in love and make their relationship work when everything is ruined by another character (in a mask of course).

But then as I wrote this, I realized that both my characters have been pretending to be something they are not in real life. They are both masquerading from the truth. My heroine has been pretending to be a frivolous lady with no cares but she is hiding a dark secret that only the hero knows. While Matthew has been living a lie. He has let Society believe he did something terrible when, in fact, he is completely innocent.

Excerpt:

“Are you a fairy or an angel?” a low raspy voice sounded behind her.

Jennette sat up straight and looked around frantically. She’d been sure there had been no one out here. Her heart pounded in her chest erratically. This was ridiculous. She was at her brother’s house in the middle of a party for ton. Only those invited could be here.

“Who’s there?”

“Well, if you’re an angel, I guess that makes me the devil. Can you resist the devil, Jennette?” the voice whispered.

Jennette stood and turned toward the voice. A man dressed like a highwayman from the last century rose from his seat behind the dying rose bushes. His clothes appeared dirty and worn, and she wondered for a moment if perhaps he wasn’t in costume. A black mask covered enough of his face to make her pause.

But as he stepped forward into the torch light, she could make out his eyes--icy gray as the morning frost. She would never forget those eyes. The way he had stared at her that morning from his seat, unable to move because of what she’d done.

He could not be here. Not at her brother’s home. Not at her birthday ball.

He’d promised to leave her alone.

“Don’t move,” he commanded. “You are the reason I c
ame to this party. I need to speak with you.”

“I have nothing to say to you.”

She lifted her skirts and ran toward the safety of the terrace and her family. The gravel crunched loudly under her feet. Couldn’t someone hear her footsteps? As she reached the first step of the terrace and within shouting distance of the party, he pulled her against his chest. His large, gloved hand covered her mouth, silencing her.

Jennette attempted to twist out his strong grip as he dragged her back into the shadows of the garden. This couldn’t be happening. Not now, when all her plans were almost complete. She had less than four weeks before her ship sailed, allowing her to leave him and this mess behind forever. He shoved her back against the pillar of the pergola and trapped her there with his arms. Fear shot through her like lightning.

“What do you want from me?” she asked.

His smile turned feral. Through the mask, she could just make out his eyes. She shivered from the cold stare he leveled at her.

“What have I always wanted from you?” his low voice rasped.

“Take off your mask,” she whispered.

“Why? You know who I am.”

“You’re frightening me.”

He leaned in closer and smiled. He drew a gloved finger along her cheek, making her tremble even more. “Good. You should be afraid of me, Jennette. You know what I could do to you and your family.”

She closed her eyes and tried her best to breathe in deeply. “Please,” she begged.

“Very well.” He untied the mask and shoved it into his vest pocket. “Better?”

God, no, she thought. Seeing his face again after five years was not better. It was far worse. Chestnut hair, too long to be fashionable, lined his square face. His high cheekbones and stubborn jaw accented his rugged features. He’d always been a handsome man but the last few years had only made him more intriguing.

So how do you feel about a masquerade? Do like to put on a costume or mask and pretend you’re something different for an evening? Do you like to attempt to figure out who is behind the mask before they speak up and you recognize their voice? What was the best costume you ever wore to a masked party?

Hey Christie! I love your excerpt. Dark secrets and a powerful hero—sounds fantastic.

I really really love masquerade stories. I'm actually writing one now, and reading one, too. Maybe it's because as a novelist, you constantly pretend to be your characters as you're writing them.

I own one wig, and it's bright red, so any costume I wear has to be someone with bright red hair. I've been Poison Ivy, Cyndi Lauper and a fairy. I think my favourite was Catwoman though...it was so much fun shopping for the rubber trousers! :-)

Hey Christie!
Thanks for the great excerpt! I love Every Night I'm Yours and I'd really love to read this one too! This masquerade story sounds very interesting, sadly I've never been to one myself.

I haven't been too a masquerade (and it's been a long time since I've been to a Halloween party), but I do like reading about them. Some of my favorite books have masquerades as a theme and it's fun because you just never know what could happen.

Hi Margay, truthfully, I haven't been to a masquerade in years. I miss it. I'm thinking I might have to host one at my house some time. Thanks for stopping by.

Hey Christie!!

Who doesn't love ot dress up and be different, if only for one night?

I love masquerade balls in books...It's neat to see a different side of the characters and something delightful usually happens.

Happy Wednesday!

Christie, Loved the excerpt. Sounds like a great book.

Where do your ideas come from? What sparks a story?

Do you have favorite characters from the books you've written?

Christie Kelley said...

Hi Kimmy! Thanks for stopping in.

Where do my ideas come from? Every where but mostly as I drift off to sleep. When I'm in that state of not quite asleep and not quite awake. Also, I do a lot of "what if" questions.

As far as my characters--I'll admit it, I love my children equally but not my characters. :)

I still love Banning who is the hero from my first book, Every Night I'm Yours. When I started writing that book, a secondary character named Somerton popped up. He's a classic bad boy rake. I'm currently writing his story (4th in series) and I adore him and his heroine.

Thanks for asking!

I love the idea of a masquearade part, but haven't been to one since I was a kids. If I could dress up like anyone, it would be kind of a sexy Viking woman.

I loved the excerpt.

I love dressing up. This is probably why my favorite holiday is Halloween.
The best costume I think, was one year when my friends and I decided to go as the members of Devo, the 80's band. They sang a one hit wonder called "Whip It". I dressed up as the lady with the headscark who got whipped, so to speak! The video is pretty funny, if you have a chance check it out on you tube.

Wow, great excerpt. Masquerades, I'm one of those folks who want to know who is really behind the mask... but I know some like the element of surprise. Looking forward to reading this one!

Hi Wendy, I'm also too curious for my own good. I love the mystery of the masquerade but I would be analyzing everyone to figure who they were.

Hi Mari, I have to admit I love dressing up too. Maybe there's an actress in me that I don't know about.

OMG, I haven't seen the Whip It video in years. I have to go to youtube now!

Hi Christie!

It's so romantic to masquerade, don't you think? I love the stories where identities are hidden, the characters can be themselves without the worries of everyday life.

It gives them a kind of freedom.

The excerpt was great! Loved it!

Thanks!

I've been to masquerades when I was younger, but never as an adult. I'd love to go to one someday though. Putting on a wig, a mask, clothes that I don't normally wear. I could be fun, pretending to be someone else for a night :)
Great excerpt!

Hi Christie! Yeah the new book is out! Been so looking forward to this one! I remember reading about a Masquerade party for the first time in a historical and I was intrigued! I love the unknown about it and the guessing of who it can be, and just totally all they hide! When asked if where I wanted to go back to time travel, it was always to Regency to go to a ball! I think I'd love to do this, especially with the costumes they had then. I think its wicked cool, LOL I would act and voice how I could of that character I'm dressed in. I'm thinking just a queen but no idea which one!

I've gone to Halloween parties, probably the last one was when we were first married, and we had to have an 'original' costume, not one you bought but one you created with anything you could find. We had a blast just making a mess of ourselves, and had fun! We dressed as a couple of hobos LOL

Hello Christie, great excerpt! I really enjoy masquerade stories, but believe it or not I have never been to a masquerade party before. I do think most of us pretend to be something where not every now and then. Do you enjoy the research part of your books?

Hi Christie,

This sounds like such a fun read - I love the masquerade scenes in novels!

I don't much dress up for masquerades. The last time I did so was in college and I wasn't hidden, I'd just came up with a costume of someone easily recognizable in my school. pretty lame! though it would be something fun to do now - next halloween

Great post, Christie. ETWK sounds very intriguing.

I do love masquerades and especially acting. I taught drama for a number of years and I love the feeling of being on a stage and pretending you're someone else. It's very freeing.

luvdaylilies, I wanted to answer your question really quick. My biggest cheerleader with my first book Every Night I'm Yours was my critique partner and author, Kathy Love. She kept telling me not to give up on this story. And I'm so glad I listened to her!

Hi Christie. I like masquerade stories. Never did it myself in real life, but it appeals because you can pretend and be a bit more daring than you normally might be being incognito Being online can be sort of like a masquerade, too, you can be any type of personality you care to be not being face-to-face with people, lol, a bit more adventurous all in fun.
