THEIR LOVE IS FORBIDDENHealer and high priestess of her people, Lady Cael is fated to life without a mate. But a mysterious explorer named Lucan Rourke doesn’t know her secrets, and his touch makes her crave a future that her extraordinary birthright has forbidden her...
BUT DANGER IS NO MATCH FOR DESIRE
Lucan has just one mission on Pendragon: to find the mythical Holy Grail, Earth’s only hope for survival. His powerful attraction to Cael is a distraction he can’t afford, unless he convinces her to join forces with him. Yet working so closely together only heightens their passion...even when the terrifying truth of Cael’s heritage threatens to shatter Lucan’s every belief—and the galaxy itself.

Thanks so much Susan for agreeing to do this Q & A today. Your book is just too delicious and I can’t wait to see what you have to say.
Terra ~ What made you decide to do the story of King Arthur and The Knights of the Round Table as a Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Romance?
Susan ~ I love futuristic romance and I’m always trying to win over new readers to try the genre. So I thought if I gave readers the King Arthur legend in a new alternative future that they might feel comfortable and familiar enough with the subject to give The Pendragon Legacy trilogy a try.
Terra ~ I love the way you took Arthur, Pendragon and Avalon and gave them a real honest theory. Who’s to say that your thoughts could or couldn’t hold some plausibility. Is King Arthur one of your favorite stories and why? Do you often dwell on the what ifs and possibilities/probabilities of how such a story came into being and the amount of truth behind it?
Susan ~ I’ve always been fascinated by legends, Greek, Viking, Roman, Celtic and King Arthur just seemed a natural fit for the story I wanted to tell. And the idea of Camelot always seemed like an ideal that fit in any time period, past, present or future.
As for “what ifs” that is how I think, doesn’t everyone? Don’t you get angry when your computer crashes and think what if it could fix itself? Don’t you see pictures or visit Stonehenge and wonder who built it and why? And what if those ancient peoples returned? Or never left?
Terra ~ Will the Tribes come to have more of a story line in any possible future books?
Susan ~ Yes! But I can’t say more without giving away secrets.
Terra ~ The story of Arthur and the second story of the Holy Grail go together nicely. Do you think there is any truth behind the possibility of him having the actual Grail in his possession since there are so many theories out there about where, when and who actually had this sacred Cup?
Susan ~ Who can say? As a writer, it’s more fun to speculate than to know what really happened. This way the possibilities remain endless.
Terra ~ Our hero Lucan is driven by the force of extinction of the human race and our heroine Cael is driven by the deadly illness of her beloved nephew, how hard was it to justify each scenario having dibs on the Holy Grail if found?
Susan ~ Not hard at all. Who wouldn’t want to save a dying child? Who wouldn’t want to save their entire race from extinction? While I write about the future and while some of my characters are not from earth, they are human. And that means they have human hopes, dreams, goals and flaws. That’s why I like to write these stories. My books are about the way people react to unusual situations—but they always react like real people. If we couldn’t relate to them, root them on, laugh with them , cry with them, then we wouldn’t care. And if we don’t care—there’s no point in writing a story. The whole point of a book is to make my characters come alive, so you feel like you’re along for the ride. Albeit a very wild ride.
Terra ~ Will your next book Rion be the last of the series or will you/are you considering more?
Susan ~ I personally hope for more as I am a true lover of all things in the Pendragon tales.
The Pendragon Legacy has been a trilogy from the start. The third book JORDAN is set for release in March 2010. The cover is on my web site www.susankearney.com. And as you can see, Jordan is one gorgeous man—with a fifteen hundred year old history.
Terra ~ The chemistry of our hero and heroine is hotter than sizzling. How hard was it for you to keep the passionate scenes temperate enough not to throw the story line into a story considered to be erotica vs. hot romance?
Susan ~ To me erotica is sex without emotion. I don’t know if that’s a good definition—but it’s my definition. So when I write a love scene, I go as hot as I want—because the emotion is there to carry it. The emotion might be anger, or curiosity or growing feelings of intimacy, but it’s the characters feelings that makes my love scenes romantic. And usually one character wants one thing from the sex, the other wants something else, creating conflict and making the sex interesting. I want to know what happens next and hopefully so does the reader.
Terra ~ What was your motivation behind writing this particular story line and why?
Susan ~ I’ve written romantic suspense, contemporary romance, science fiction, historical romance and futuristic romance. Combining romance and science fiction lets me combine my two favorite genres—science fiction and romance. And in this series, I was lucky enough to get to write my favorite kind of books. Adding the paranormal element of dragon shapers was an added bonus.
Terra ~ What are your thoughts and feelings about some of our oldest tales really being interactions with races from other similar planets?
Susan ~ I’d love to know the truth. We have so many artifacts on Earth we cannot explain. And yet, it could be that civilization has risen and fallen many times. Or we could have been visited by aliens. While I love to speculate, I like to keep an open mind.
Terra ~ Will you at some point in the future give us more of the outcome of Lucan and Cael in relationship to saving/not saving the human race?
Susan ~ Yes. Lucan and Cael make appearances in RION and JORDAN.
Terra ~ In today’s society how do you think we would react if given scientific facts justifying the truth behind King Arthur and The Holy Grail? Do you think that we could possibly keep greed and our own conceited self preservation from starting a Global incident if such a thing were true?
Susan ~ I believe greed is part of humanity’s DNA, it’s our way of self-preservation. A certain amount of Greed is good, it’s what motivates us to want better lives for ourselves and our children.

Hi Susan, I've recently started reading science fiction romance stories and really enjoyed the excerpt for Lucan. I see that you have three books coming out soon in this series. Will the series wrap up in those three or are there more planned?

Hi All,
Sorry I'm a bit late getting here. I have been swamped with emails and blogs!! To answer your questions, I was sneaky about how I got these covers. I used titles of men's names because I wanted yummy men on my covers And boy did the art department at GCP deliver. :)
As for the series, all the books are about the legend. Will there be more? I don't know. It depends on how many people buy these books. It's not up to me. So if you don't win the contest, I'm hoping you'll buy the book.
It's actually quite difficult to get publishers to print futuristic romances. They believe it's a small niche market. But you know vampires were once a small niche market, so a writer can only hope that word will spread . . . And for that i need to depend upon readers to spread the word. I'm not a huge author. My marketing budget is tiny.
Yes, I did a cool video--you can see it at www.susankearney.com And you can read an excerpt of the book there for free.
Oh yest, one other question about how this book is different from other King Arthur stories--um--this one goes into space. :) And Avalon is on another world. so yes, it's different.
And for those of you who have never read a futuristic, please try Lucan. I'd really appreciate it!
