A few of my Favorite Things…by Cynthia Eden

Thanks so much to the Yankee Romance Reviewers for having me over today! It’s a pleasure to be here!

In this post, I’m going to talk about a few of my favorite things—well, actually, I’m going to talk about a few of my favorite supernatural beings. (Hey, it’s October…the month of supernatural fun!) I love paranormal characters. I love the possibilities and the worlds that can be created with these characters. So much potential…it’s all waiting inside those characters.

My favorite supernaturals (in no particular order) are: vampires, shifters, and genies.

No, my vampire of choice isn’t Edward. I like my vamps much, much darker…with a hard, dangerous edge. I like my shifters to be fierce beasts—but controlled by the men and women who carry the animals. And for the genies…well, I like anyone who will grant my wishes for me. J/K

As a paranormal writer, it’s a thrill to create these characters. It’s always fun to take the mythology of these beings and twist them as I make them my “own” in the books. New slants on old legends are my specialty! I love thinking of ways to modernize the old stories—you always have to give these supernaturals a modern edge.

In my latest paranormal novella, “In the Dark” (featured in BELONG TO THE NIGHT), I paired up two of my favorite supernatural characters. My hero is a vampire and my heroine is a leopard shifter. The heroine also happens to be the vamp’s ex-lover, and when she sees her supposedly undead ex walking around…well, she’d not a happy camper.

Throwing opposite characters together can often create intriguing sparks, so when you take two powerful beings—beings who should be fierce enemies—and make them lovers…it can make for a great writing adventure.

Since I’ve spilled about my favorite paranormals, now it’s your turn. Which supernatural beings do you love to read about during this wonderfully spooky time of the year?

Happy haunting!
Cynthia Eden

Excerpt from “In The Dark” (BELONG TO THE NIGHT anthology):

Her dead lover stood on the other side of the bar, rubbing his hand against the back of some long-legged redhead and looking very much alive.

Sadie James drew in a deep breath. Caught the scent of smoke. Expensive perfume. Sweat.

I went to that jerk’s funeral. Cried over his grave.

A grave he didn’t seem to be occupying.

She’d even taken flowers to the graveside.

The redhead laughed. Tossed back her head. The man turned, braced his hand against the wall behind her head and leaned in even closer to her.

Rage had Sadie’s back teeth grinding together.

She stalked across the bar, elbowing dancing men and women out of her way. Her fingers curled, and a hard fury tightened her body.

Two years. For two damn years she’d thought he was dead. While he was out there screwing redheads. Redheads who wore really trashy pink dresses.

He was bent over the woman now. His mouth poised over her throat.

Sadie was going to rip the bastard apart.

The redhead laughed. A high, tipsy giggle.

Sadie growled.

And even though she was still at least ten feet away, and the music blaring from the band jumping on stage was ear-splitting loud, Liam Sullivan stiffened. His dark head snapped up. He spun around, scanning the crowd.

His eyes, too damn blue and bright for a dead man, locked on her. She saw his stare widen and his lips began to curve into a smile—

A smile she’d knock off his still too-handsome face. “Liam.”

I love reading about vampires. They are the top on my list of paranormal creatures. Live forever and never physically age, perfect bodies, and supernatural powers; what more does a girl want.
I love the cover model for your latest book. And the excerpt was fantastic. Thanks for another wonder story.

I enjoy (and yes love) books that include witches, but then I've had an attraction to witches since my teens (fascinated by Wicca and paganism)

Friend of mine loaned me some of your books because I was interested in reading you. I read one and I got hooked.

I'm taking extreme care of them because they are signed.

I have a hard time choosing my favorite paranormal/supernatural beings because I tend to like them all. I do like those beings who have a bit of an edge to them. My favorite of all time will most likely always stay Frankenstein's monster because he is so creepy while also maintaining a gripping humanity.

As for more modern paranormal/supernatural beings, I really like Shelly Laurenston's shifters because they all have such a wonderful sense of humor. I cannot stop laughing when I read the dialogue in her books because it's so witty.

Any paranormal creature has my attention. Shape shifters (jaguars in particular),vampires and dragon shifters are my favorites. I also find the puca interesting, too. The supernatural creature comes from the Irish and welsh folklore. They are fairy-like and can shape shift. Their favorite shape is the black horse with yellow eyes. They're known to give the rider one heck of a ride. (You can take that anyway you want.) lol

I wish you a Happy Halloween!

LLehn, I'm always happy to meet another paranormal fan! Happy Halloween right back at you!

Hey, librarypat! Witches can be such incredible characters. Anya Bast has a great witch series that I love.

Thank you, tetewa! And I do love to see vamps and shifters battle it out as the faves. :-)

Hi Cynthia,
Shifters are my fav type of paranormal read. I like that the characters have two seperate instincts, one as an animal, the other as a human and how it all meshes together in their personality.

Have you ever considered writing a straight contemporary w/o paranormal elements?

Cynthia,
To answer your question, I like to read about ghosts during this time of year. Not mean, nasty, wicked ghosts but nice, funny, friendly ghosts.
